Cosmetics Organization 101

Shopping for, and buying new cosmetics can be as fun and exciting as shopping for a new wardrobe. With so many eye shadow palettes, lipstick shades, nail colors and what  not, it’s no surprise so many of us gals end up with an artillery of makeup and beauty products. I’ll admit that it can be somewhat of a vice – or even addiction – to continuously purchase new cosmetics. And why not? They’re so much fun and make us feel so pretty (oh, so pretty!). But regardless of how much makeup you own, there’s one thing all girls should master (aside from awesome blending techniques); makeup storage and organization. So with that said, here are some lessons for organizing, storing and prolonging the life of your beloved cosmetics.

Lesson 1: Organization

The first step to taking care of your cosmetics is getting organized. It’s easy to just toss them in a zipper bag, a drawer or leave them laying around the counter, but by organizing them you not only clear up clutter, you also make it easier to find your cosmetics! There are a great cosmetics organizers that hold items in place and fit perfectly in a drawer or sit neatly on your vanity/counter. Acrylic organizers are an excellent choice, but you can also keep things tidy and compartmentalized inside a cosmetics case.

Lesson 2: Storage

The second, but definitely most important factor in making the most of your cosmetics is storing it properly. You can prolong the life and use of your makeup by keeping it away from moisture, direct sunlight and high temperatures. While the bathroom is a go-to storage location for makeup, it is also a place with high levels of moisture and sometimes heat (hello, steamy showers!). Unless you are completely sure that your makeup is safe from excessive moisture and heat when stored in your bathroom (maybe somewhere in a deep drawer?), it’s best to store it elsewhere.

Lesson 3: Maintenance

Last, but not least, maintaining your makeup and cosmetics tools is necessary. If your makeup is organized and stored properly then the need to maintain will be essentially non-existent. Of course, the occasional smudging and spill-overs will require clean up, but other than that, all should be in good shape. However, maintaining your cosmetics brushes and applicators is primary and should not be overlooked. Tap or wipe off  (on a tissue) any excess makeup from brushes after use and wash them regularly. Washing brushes regularly prevents makeup buildup and, in turn, breakouts caused by harbored bacteria. Use lukewarm water, mild soap (shampoo works too), or a special makeup brush cleanser, and always let brushes dry completely before using them again. To maintain their shape, store brushes in a roll up case or plastic bag and keep separate from other items. Bonus Tip: Protect bristles from damage by covering ends of makeup brushes with mesh tubes before storing.
