Throughout high school, I was a stylish kid. People often complimented me on my cute boots, my adorable dresses and my penchant for new coats. (I still own so many. I think it’s a disease.) However, I wasn’t completely satisfied with my look. There was just something missing. I would look in the mirror and think, What is it here that’s just not jiving? It took me a while to realize what it was. Wanna know?
My look was too perfect.
People, if your style isn’t a little offbeat, a little wrong, then it just isn’t right. It’s missing the “cool factor.” What am I saying, you ask? What is all this “cool factor” mumbo jumbo? I’m happy to tell you! It’s finding perfection in the imperfect elements of your style. The best way I can explain this is to let you know how it works for me. Let’s discuss an example.
I love wearing short dresses that fall just above the knee for spring. They are a staple in my wardrobe. I have them in many colors and prints, and you better believe I pull those babies out several times a week when the weather gets warm enough. Now, most probably assume I’d pair my little floral dress with a pair of dainty ballet flats, or maybe strappy sandals. Something feminine and flirty. Well, those projectors would have been right. I used to. But when I realized my looks were missing that necessary “cool factor,” I changed my style philosophy.
Today, I wouldn’t dream of pairing a girlie dress with girlie shoes. I’m doing one of two things, instead: I’m pulling on lace-ups for a masculine/feminine contrast, or I’m getting quirky and mixing prints — if the dress is floral, then I’ll break out my leopard heels and rock those.
I’m not saying I have perfect style. I don’t. I have as many icky fashion days as anyone else, but I’m genuinely pleased with how my style has evolved through the years. It feels more natural and less forced. I’m embracing the unconventional for a added dose of sass.
Maybe you’re feeling like your style is falling flat, too. Maybe you’re not sure why your floral dress and ballet flats just aren’t cutting it in the sartorial department. May I suggest that you break a few style rules? Throw some crazy into your wardrobe. Work on throwing one unexpected piece into your look. If you’re main piece is girlie — a dress or skirt — then pair it with a fedora, aviators, a leather vest or something with a masculine vibe. If you’re going sophisticated — a pair of sleek trousers or button-down — then break out some nerdy glasses or a fierce python clutch for some edge.
Predictable is boring. Unexpected and imperfect is spot-on. Shake up your look — start this weekend!
