Trend Spotlight: ’70s Chic

This spring, we’re climbing into our metaphorical time machines and heading back to the ’70s. Designers took cues from yesteryear to update old trends from decades past. The relaxed, boho vibe is here to stay for the season, so I’m going to recommend you invest in a couple (or many) fabulous pieces that evoke that modern-flashback look. What are the ’70s pieces you just have to steal? I have the breakdown, fashionistas.

Striped top. It’s all about stripes on a loose, floaty silhouette. Grab a tee that you can pair with anything this season, from skinnies to a skirt, leggings to harem pants. Then, add layered necklaces in pops of color, like coral or turquoise, to take your look up another notch.

Printed, wide-leg pants. Tiny prints are a ’70s essential. Also, wide-leg silhouettes are another must-have. Combine those two elements and you have a great ode-to-the-era. I spotted these pants from Topshop, and I am officially dubbing them a must-have of the season. Seriously. They’re ’70s done oh-so-right.

Long-sleeve dress. There’s nothing more glam than a chiffon dress with sleeves, to pick one up this spring! Wear the look with a pair of wedges and a long pendant, or add in feathered earrings for a fun update. I would also suggest modernizing the piece with a cropped denim jacket or a menswear watch. It’s all about balance, my friends.

Platform heels. They just scream ’70s — in the best sense. A pair of strappy platforms will go with anything. Try matching them with high-waisted short-shorts and a crop top, or work them in with that gorgeous long-sleeved gown we just talked about. You can easily dress these up or down, so work with that versatility.

Wide-brimmed hat. From the catwalk to the sidewalk to the beach, this accessory was plucked straight of the Marc Jacobs runway just for you. If you take a hint from Marc, as you should, then it’s an essential of the season. Wear it with your swimsuit on the sand or to shop in a pair of wide-leg jeans and a flouncy top. Pair with oversize Jackie O. sunglasses for crazy-sophisticated style, and voilà! It’s a piece fit for a ’70s style princess. (Well, you know, a modern one, anyway.)
