Do’s and Don’ts: Statement Jewelry

Being a girl is fun. We not only have infinite options in the clothes we wear, but also have a never-ending selection of fabulous accessories to go with the outfits we create. Thank goodness for shoes, handbags, belts, scarves and jewelry! Oh, jewelry! I’m a big fan of cocktail rings (I simply can’t resist them!) but sometimes I like to jazz things up with a few different pieces; long necklaces, bangles and, occasionally, earrings. The pieces we wear with our clothes can make or break an entire outfit, so it’s important to know a few basic rules about statement jewelry. These days, almost anything goes, but alas, there are still a few do’s and don’ts.

DO: Wear jewelry! I know some gals like to keep their outfits fuss-free most of the time (myself included), but that shouldn’t stop anyone from wearing a great statement piece. That one fabulous necklace, earrings or set of bangles can take an outfit from drab to fab, instantly!

DON’T: Be afraid to go big. It’s called statement jewelry for a reason; the bigger, the better (in many cases). A bold bib necklace, chunky cuff or chandelier earrings are always fun to wear with a subdued outfit. Big and bold statement pieces are having a major moment right now, so don’t be afraid to experiment with them.

DO: Mix and Match. There is absolutely nothing wrong with coupling a few pieces which aren’t exactly meant to go together. Just like mix and match prints can be fun and stylish with clothes, you can achieve the same effortlessly chic look with your jewelry. Jewelry that is too matchy-matchy is a thing of the past! This also goes for metals; mixing gunmetal with silver is modern and edgy, while the gold and copper combo is vintage romantic.

DON’T: Go overboard. Beware not to incorporate one too many pieces into your outfit, otherwise you may look over-accessorized. The key is to balance out your jewelry; don’t wear bold earrings, bold necklace, bracelets and a ring all at once. Instead, pair your bold earrings with a set of bangles or cocktail ring; wear a statement necklace with small, simple earrings, and so on.

DO: Shop vintage. While a brand new piece of jewelry is always fun to have, shopping for vintage pieces at an antique store or thrift shop can be just as great, not to mention budget-friendly. You’d be amazed at what you can find, and the best part is that most of the jewelry you’ll find will be one-of-a-kind.

DON’T: Wait to wear them. Sometimes we like to think that statement jewelry should be left for evening events and other special occasions. Think again! Statement jewelry can – and should! – be worn anytime, any day. Spruce up your office look with a great piece (or a couple of pieces) of statement jewelry or put on your best jewels for a Saturday lunch with the girls. The key is to have fun and look great, anytime you want!

Isn’t statement jewelry great? While jewelry trends may change from season to season, wearing jewelry never goes out of style. Personally, when I wear a really great statement piece, like one of my favorite cocktail rings or bangles, it  helps me feel that much more stylish and chic – honestly!
