Happy, happy Thursday everyone! We are just one day shy of the weekend and, even though the weather has been rather gloomy, cold and rainy in Southern California, I don’t think it’s too soon to start thinking about a cool new pair (or a couple of pairs) of shades. As I’ve mentioned before, I am I anxious for the sun to come out and the weather to warm up so I can be in full spring mode! Sunny days call for sunglasses and I’ve narrowed down the list to my top 3 picks for this weekend – and beyond! The common denominator here? They’re all retro inspired designs and will make any outfit look that much cooler.
As you all know, the 70′s were a huge inspiration for many of the spring 2011 runway shows and everything from wide-leg pants to platform heels are making a huge comeback this spring. This wave of reinvented fashion certainly doesn’t exclude a cool pair of large round sunglasses! Get into character with a chic retro look by wearing a pair of high-waist, wide-leg pants (denim is hot!) and a silky blouse tucked in with a slim leather belt. Heighten your look with some chic platform sandals and, if you’re feeling really retro, put on a wide-brim floppy hat. You’ll look so glam, everyone will be wondering, “Who’s that girl?”
I think of old Hollywood when I think cat eye shades and always feel like a starlet when I try a pair on. Lately, larger versions of the cat eye have become more and more popular giving new life to an iconic retro accessory. Think Audrey Hepburn when you put on a pair of cat-eyes; chic black from head-to-toe. For a casual day out, a boat neck top and pair of black skinnies with cute flats are ideal (think Funny Face). If you’re feeling ultra feminine and sophisticated, compliment your cat-eye shades with a black sheath dress and pumps. Don’t forget a few layers of pearls - SO Breakfast at Tiffany’s!
Ok, I’m definitely on a Hollywood craze today, because my final – but certainly not least – favorite retro shades pick is the classic Wayfarer. These have really made a comeback in recent years and are a great option for both men and women. Wayfarers are synonymous with cool and laid back (Hello, James Dean!), making them a perfect weekend choice. Compliment these sunglasses with a pair of boyfriend jeans (cuffed), a simple white tee and striped cardigan, and walk comfortably in a pair of canvas slip-ons. If you want to doll things up a bit, switch the boyfriend look for a floral dress, flat sandals and fedora hat.
Who’s ready for some sunshine now? I know I am! Perhaps if we all unite and wear shades this weekend, we will somehow lure the sun into coming out to play? Ok, maybe that’s just my wishful thinking – but I know I’m not alone! What do you think of these retro shades? What’s your favorite style of sunglasses?
