All right, folks. There’s nothing that saddens me more than a look that absolutely screams… blah. No accessories? No color? No life? Just, NO!
For today’s style breakdown, I cover the ways you can avoid looking “blah” and instead amp up your look with personality and style!
Tennis shoes are for running. Don’t quote me on this, but I think that it was Oprah who once said, “Shorts are for the beach.” I think you can do a chic pair of shorts these days, but let me re-work her ‘A is for B’ phrase a little bit. I say, “Tennis shoes are for running.” Yep. If you’re not on a treadmill prepping for a marathon or something, then nix the athletic footwear. Flats, boots, heel, wedges… there are so many alternatives!
Show me COLOR. Black and gray? We’re thinking toward spring! It’s time to infuse a little life into that wardrobe with color. For an overall drab outfit, I would add in a pretty scarf or headband in a print or bright. Just a little pop goes a long, long way.
A bag will do wonders for your look. Seriously. I just bought a fringed bag as my transitional spring piece from H&M for a mere $30, and it punches up every outfit. I feel instantly sartorially savvy every time I get the awesome pleasure of leaving my house with it slung over my arm. Get a bag you just adore. (I vote fringed!) You deserve it.
Try a blazer for polish. The boyfriend blazer is such a neglected essential. Every gal should snag one or two. And want to know a hint, ladies? Thrifted blazers are the way to go. You can easily find designer ones that are just made better than a mass-produced topper from a chain store. I’ve picked up blazers by Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and, wait for it… Christian Dior… by scouring thrift stores. Yay for stylish steals!
Long necklaces are ever-so chic. I think I fell in love with long, chain necklaces when I saw Anne Hathaway don them in “The Devil Wears Prada” with a pair of sleek, black riding boots, an oversize blazer and a simple shift dress. You can wear mixed metal chains with anything, so start there the next time you head out on an accessory shopping run!
How do you give your outfits a little extra pizzazz? Let me know in the comments!
