Natalie Portman has come quite a long way from the beginning of her Star Wars days nearly a decade ago. She has turned into a bona fide fashion icon and superstar actress. This year, she’s been making waves on the red carpet for her style, screen chops and love life, as well.
Natalie’s performance this year in “Black Swan” is exquisite, playing a ballerina who slowly begins to unravel and lose her mind. She was the pitch-perfect actress to play this role, as she displays an incredible amount of grace and sophistication. Lucky for fashion followers, that translates well in terms on award season style!
She has been known in the past for an almost avant garde red carpet wardrobe, picking ethereal headpieces and flowing tulle gowns. This season, as she marches into the next couple months of awards shows as the Best Actress front-runner, her fashion choices have changed — with good reason — but she is still making headlines and best-dressed lists.
Even though the girl was totally pregnant and sporting a baby bump at the ceremony on Sunday, Natalie looked beautiful and glowing on the red carpet for the Golden Globes (where she took home the trophy for Best Actress in a drama film to boot). She wore a light pink satin Viktor & Rolf floor-length gown with a red flower accent at the bust line. At first when I saw this dress decision, I really wasn’t sure about it. The palette seemed off, and the choice of material a little puzzling.
But now, it’s starting to grow on me. I like it. I’ve had a major style epiphany.
It worked because it was 100 percent true to Natalie’s risk-taking fashion-sense. It was a daring fabric and color combination, especially for a lovely lady who’s with child, but she pulled it off, exuding the shine of a winner who was totally owning her look.
For the rest of awards season, the statuettes will be Natalie’s to lose, since she is the runaway favorite to take home every prize. Next up? The Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, where I am hoping this girl chooses to wow us in something a little different from the Globes, possibly a little shorter and with a bit of sparkle. No matter what, though, she’ll work it out. I am sure.
However, the big day of knockout style will arrive on Feb. 27 at the Academy Awards. Whether she takes home top honors or not, she’ll look every bit a champ in the fashion department. And let’s be honest, that’s the most important victory, right?
