Have you ever heard the saying that no idea is original anymore, you just have to learn to do it better than everyone else? I think that phrase totally applies to today’s street style breakdown.
The girl in this photo is working one of the season’s hottest trends: gray. It’s a pretty simple concept, and pretty much everyone can take a shot at this style. (It’s not like jumpsuits where only two people on the planet can actually wear the look.) But our fashion subject manages to shake things up just enough. Her look goes from bland to brilliant with just a few quick elements. As usual, let me tell you exactly why her look is hitting the right notes, and maybe one way I would punch it up.
The heeled boots add a touch of class. I love flat boots. When I am forced to trudge all over the good, green Earth, you better believe my shoe of choice is flat as a board. However, if you’re looking to doll up a look a little bit, to add a little feminine pow, then a wide-heeled boot is a great place to start. They are still fairly easy to walk in, will give you a little lift, and also make your legs look long and lean — all fabulous qualities in my book!
The wrap detailing of the sweater is interesting. When you are playing with a relatively simple palette, it’s important to add a little intrigue to your look somewhere. In the sweater, it’s the layered effect in the folds of the sweater and the tiny cutouts. It draws the eye in and creates a pretty, laid-back vibe. Love it!
A menswear-ish watch is always a good idea. I can’t think of a single thing that a banded watch doesn’t go with. It puts a little punch into every outfit. Whether it’s a plain tee and jeans or something overtly feminine like an A-line skirt, boots and a blouse, throw on a fab watch and you will instantly add some style cred.
She mixes in a print. Hooray! She’s in 100 percent neutrals, but again, I’m not bored! Our girl has achieved this with the sweater details and also with the hounds-tooth pattern at the neckline. This is a fun way to use a black-and-white print as your pizazz piece instead of a bright. I’m on board with prints this season, and I think you should try out a few yourself!
What’s missing? A dash of candy color as arm candy! The one item I would like to see this lovely lady pick up? A bold-hued bag! It will totally complete the look. I’m going to suggest either an electric blue tote or a cross-body bag in fire engine red. Add that last element, and she’ll be completely style savvy and ready to hit the street again.
