We’re only days away from bidding farewell to 2010 and saying hello to 2011. This can only mean one thing: It’s Party Time! The end of the year is a time to celebrate and look back at the many wonderful things that came our way, as well as a time to look forward to what the new year will bring us. Getting ready for New Year’s celebrations is also something that comes along with year-end; but what do you wear and how should you wear it? I’ve outlined some of the essential Do’s & Don’ts for New Year’s attire below.
DO: Sparkle and shine! New Year’s celebrations are synonymous with glitz and glamour but this year, more than ever, the glitz is in overdrive. The shops are overflowing with sequined dresses and glittery pieces (almost as a foretelling of the overflowing glasses of sparkling champers on New Year’s Eve) and there is something for just about everyone. A popular style is the strapless mini dress, but there is also a variety of sparkly sequined tops, skirts and accessories from which to choose.
DON’T: Douse yourself in glitter from head to toe. I know it almost sounds contradictory to the above, but simply because glitter and sequins are a New Year’s staple, doesn’t mean you have to look like a Christmas ornament (besides, Christmas is SO last week). Only select one or two sparkly pieces to jazz up your entire outfit. If one of your most focal outfit pieces is fully sequined, such as your dress, make that the only sparkling part of your outfit. Accessorize with toned down pieces and contrasting textures such as a ruched velvet clutch, and some simple jewelry.
DO: Focus on your hair. Part of a well executed New Year’s celebration look is the hair. You may have a fabulous dress and “where did you get that?” accessories, but without a nice do your look is not complete. Carrying a retro inspired ‘do like a soft beehive (not a Snooki bump, however!) will make any look ultra chic, but if you like something a little less elaborate, a loosely curled side pony tail with side-swept bangs is a very feminine and classy hair style.
DON’T: Cake on the makeup! As fun as it is to play dress up and transform ourselves into something we rarely look like, layering on makeup is never a favorable look. Your makeup should compliment your outfit, not compete with it. Shimmery, metallic shadows are in and will play well with a shimmery dress, but if you want something a bit more sultry, soft, smoky eyes are always a win. Bold red lips are also in but if you are going for this look, keep your eye makeup simple with some light shadow and mascara. Draw attention to your lips or your eyes – not both.
I’m just about ready to ring in the New Year and am looking forward to dressing up to the nines for a night on the town. I hope you are too (ready to celebrate, that is). Let’s greet 2011 in style – grab your shimmers, glitters and metallics, because it’s time to celebrate!
