Style Review: The Hits and Misses of a Model

OK, so the lady in this picture just so happens to be a model. (Do you know who it is? For the sake of our style breakdown anonymity, she shall remain nameless. Which I think she’d like, as she obviously wants to go incognito — notice the dark shades?). Model gal is looking pretty chic, isn’t she? I think so (for the most part!), but I noticed that she is playing in dangerous style territory. She’s a supermodel, so she can pull most anything off; however, let’s learn from her outfit. I break it down below.

HIT: The color palette. I am head-over-heels for the beige and black colors that she is totally rocking in this picture. I also love black and brown, like she is working in the shoes. Forget what you have heard about those hues — they absolutely go together. In fact, they are incredibly chic together. If you are not sporting black with various shades of brown in your looks, then I insist you take a cue from our fashionista here and start. (NOTE: The only thing to keep in mind is that the back and brown should not be so close to the same color that people think you have mistaken the two for the same color. Otherwise, go for it!)

MISS: Trend overdose
. I see an oversize sweater. I see an asymmetrical skirt. I see oxford flats. I see wayfarer glasses. And all these pieces are totally on-trend and totally gorgeous. I would wear any one of them, just not together. If you work too many trendy pieces into one look, then you run the risk of all your items fighting for attention. That’s a little overwhelming (and a little unfair to your fabulous pieces, which are being overshadowed). A quick fix for this look would be to simply pull one of the pieces and swap it for a basic. I think a plain white tee would look great with this. Nix the sweater.

HIT: The shoes paired with the skirt. One of the big trends for spring is slated to be oxford shoes (or spectators, or jazz shoes… they have like a billion names). This girl has wisely paired her trendy kicks with a short skirt. She clearly knows that her shoes are total show-offs and demand a little limelight, so she isn’t hiding them under long pants. The skirt-shoe combo is spot on.

MISS: The cut of the sweater. I love the color of the sweater, and even the weight. But the cut isn’t doing much for her (and if it can hurt a supermodel, then we’ve got problems). This piece makes her look too boxy up top, which is a little unflattering. A sweater with a streamlined fit, or even a cowl neck to show a little collarbone, would be a much better option.

HIT: The accessories. This miss has managed to pull some ah-mah-zing extras into her look, and I am totally digging every one. They just scream I-don’t-take-myself-too-seriously and I-am-effortlessly-cool. Definitely steal these accessories, friends. Wayfarer lenses are here to stay for the coming season, oxfords will definitely still be around, and every girl needs to own an edgy black carryall. It’s in the Cool Kid Style Manual. I just checked. It’s the first thing on the list of must-haves.

What do you think of Ms. Nameless Model’s style? Are you going to work any of her trends? (And if you know her name, go ahead and shout it in the comments. However, I will not be the one to incriminate her!)
