The Sartorialist Blog: Complete and Total Fashion Genius

Scott Schuman essentially rewrote the book on fashion inspiration for a new generation. His blog, The Sartorialist, has an arguably greater impact on the style stratosphere than any other piece of media on the planet. Why? Because designers are looking for what we want to wear, and Scott is capturing it with his street-style photographs.

If you have never ventured onto The Sartorialist, then I suggest you set aside a block of time in the near future to do so. A few minutes won’t be enough. I can never spend just a few minutes on his blog. The style on the site is absolutely captivating. You will be enthralled scrolling through picture after picture. When I first found it, it was the only Internet location I frequented for days. I went through years of his archives, too. It’s just that good.

Take a trip with Mr. Sartorialist to Milano, where he shows us what Italian chic really looks like. Hop over to Paris for fashion week. Forget what’s on the runway. We’ll be checking out the real fashion, the clothes on the street outside the shows. Next, head off to Berlin, slip over to Sydney, travel to Buenos Aires or flit across to London. Then finally venture back stateside to the Big Apple. There is nothing like New York City fashion, right? With the click of a mouse, you can see the style on Fifth Avenue or the looks on Crosby Street. Scott has gladly traveled the world to bring us the best fashion from the most stylish people on the planet. It’s awe-inducing.

I remember the moment I fell in love with The Sartorialist. Scott mentioned something in a post about how spontaneous the blog was; he simply took his camera around on his travels and documented the people he found most stylish. He said he didn’t know anything about most of them (with a few exceptions in Sartorialist celebrities Anna Dello Russo, Eva Fontanelli and Giovanna Battaglia, whose sublime tastes have captured Scott’s attention). Style-wise, his subjects could be caught on their best day, or on their absolute worst. But the bottom line? All the stars in his photos are undeniably fashion-savvy. They have a distinct flair that makes them each unique, and also entirely real.

I think that is amazing, and major designers must, too. As legend has it, they use Scott’s images as inspiration for their collections. Incredible, right?

Guess what, everyone? Thanks to Scott Schuman, fashion legends are listening to you now. The Sartorialist is in the business of making real people style icons. Who knows? Maybe one of us is next.
