Celebrity Hair Cuts: Top Leading Ladies With Pixies

Audrey Tautou as “Amélie” — Her abbreviated bangs and tiny bob are cuter than baby penguins and puppies. She even looks great with the bob pulled back into a ponytail. (How does she do it?) At the end of the day, she gets her man, looks adorable and makes us all want to move to Paris.

Jean Seberg in “Beathless” — Yet another short-haired beauty in Paris. This time it’s a brash American girl hawking newspapers. She might have had a stalled career, tumultuous personal life and unfortunate end, but Seberg’s pixie cut and tomboyish demeanor makes life abroad for American woman (without her requisite gym shoes, boot-cut jeans, polar fleece and limp ponytail pulled back into a scrunchie) seem like a distinct possibility.

Demi Moore in “G.I. Jane” — The toughest short-haired lady on screen, Demi and her one-armed push-ups make me feel ashamed of myself for the 20-minute workouts I do on the recombinant bicycle while watching “Seinfeld” reruns. In fact, that’s why she’s so brilliant in this role. She makes me want to do more than the bare minimum to keep my muffin top in check. She’s tough, and while I won’t be shaving my head like she did, I’ll internalize her kickass attitude for my future workouts. Some might take Natalie Portman’s shave in “V for Vendetta” over Demi’s, but Demi did hers on purpose.

Franka Potente in “The Bourne Identity” —Jason Bourne may be hot, but that can’t be the reason why Franka is amazing with her short hair (but it’s definitely the reason we watch it over and over again). Potente’s Maria rocks a choppy short ’do and leather trousers, but it’s the way in which she gets the cropped cut that makes it so brilliant. Bourne cuts her hair to disguise her. The scene is damn sexy. If my haircuts were that charged, then I’d be getting them once a week!

Karen Duffy from MTV — Because she owned that mid-1990s look (brick red lipstick, turtle necks, overalls and a bit of body con. (Can we say Multiples? You all remember those?) She was Cindy Crawford’s Bombshell answer to The Girl Next Door, and she might be the last thing I ever watched on MTV. You know, back when it showed MUSIC VIDEOS.

Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander — Do you notice the correlation between badass women and short hair? Although there are plenty of long-haired badasses, most are played by Angelina Jolie (Laura Croft, Mrs. Smith, Salt, et al.), and I can’t write a post on just Jolie! Lisbeth is tiny, tough, angry, genius and a world-class hacker. Misunderstood and alone in the world except for the friendship of Señor Blomkvist (peculiar, considering the original Swedish title for the first novel is Men Who Hate Women), she solves mysteries, beats (and beats up) bad guys, gets revenge for wrongs done and rides a motorcycle. Short hair and all.
