Beauty Gift Sets: Yea or Nay for the Holidays?

Imagine: You ever get a beautifully wrapped gift, and you canÂ’t wait to open it. You tear the paper and ribbons apart, only to have your heart sink. ItÂ’s a gift set of beauty products that youÂ’ll never use. Things like strawberry-scented bubble bath or White Musk body lotion.

Are these gifts really what you want to be given? TheyÂ’re obviously products that need to be selected personally; otherwise, you could end up looking three shades darker than you want to. As a gift-giver, I wouldnÂ’t suggest buying someone a set of beauty products unless one of these four things applies:

1. ItÂ’s a limited edition product that everyone is after (include the recipient in question).
2. The recipient has specifically requested the product you bought them.
3. YouÂ’re gifting one of those massive, all-colors-included palettes.
4. YouÂ’re OK with throwing your money at something thatÂ’ll spend its lifetime collecting dust.

Often fragrance and perfumed items are just as personally catered. Remember in “The Devil Wears Prada” when Miranda (Meryl Streep) freaks out about the scent of freesias, which she detests? Most of us aren’t as demanding as that, but I do know I would have to try really hard to feign excitement if someone gave me a Thierry Mugler Angel gift set. The gagging would probably be a dead giveaway, too.

Yet beauty brands, many amazing ones at that, create special Christmas gift sets, limited-run items and seasonal scents. So in the end, do you buy them as gifts? And on the receiving end, if you get a crab pack of mini-Christmas lotions, do you want to ask for the cash equivalent, or are you thrilled with the new additions for your guest bathroom toiletries?

If that is a risk you are willing to take, then hereÂ’s a list of some reliable gift sets. (Apparently, the British are keener on Christmas beauty sets than Americans are.)
