Travel Kit: Tips for Packing Your Dopp Kit Part II

Still having trouble with that Dopp kit? Yeah, it’s hard to whittle down. Use our tips yesterday to get a start on the process and use these last few to really banish bulk:

If you can live withouth styling tools, leave them am home. A blow dryer? Straightener? Curling iron? Do Yyu really need all three?!

Those alone will fill your entire carry-on. If you must, bring one.

Most hotels have blow dryers. If you really want to travel light, bring dry shampoo, get a blow out locally (and get expert styling, natch) and use the dry shampoo to make it last for four or five days. The money you spend on blowouts is the money you would be spending on checked baggage if you brought along your own tools.

This one isn’t for your Dopp kit, but if you workout on the road, then:

You don’t need a full separate workout wardrobe! Seriously… Those marshmallow-y, bulky trainers, half dozen socks, thick Lycra workout leggings, sweatshirts, etc. Leave most of it at home. You can do calisthenics in your room or find a local yoga studio. If you must, bring a pair of trainers you can also wear in public without having American tourist (and pick-pocket target) stamped across your forehead.

Superga and Puma trainers are great for that. Bring one pair of black yoga pants that double as pajamas and are stylish enough to be worn out. The only other things you need are one to two pairs of socks and same with small workout tanks. Or even use your one-piece bathing suit in lieu of a workout shirt. Better yet, just pack the suit and find a local pool for really compact workout gear packing. Wash socks, suit and tanks in the sink nightly with that shampoo mentioned yesterday.

If you really truly must pack all sorts of beauty aides, then we at least suggest going with a few brands who do it right. Japonesque makes an amazing set of travel makeup brushes and a compact travel eyelash curler. Too Faced has a slim, tiny kabuki brush that’s no bigger than a pack of gum and can be used for everything from contouring to applying powder and blush. Urban Decay’s new nude palette can take care of your eyeshadow and eyebrow needs. You might even be able to make some colored lipglosses with some of the hues (just scrape off a bit and mix with clear balm). Bobby pins can be used for everything from make shift zipper pulls to putting your hair in a French twist. Benefit makes its Bad Gal Lash in mini-tubes.

Last, 3floz.com is a website that sells just prestige products in TSA- approved sizes.

Now go forth and pack less!
