Lips on the Autumn/Winter runways for 2010 were anointed with suitably on-trend vampiric pouts, thanks to the spate of vampire shows, movies and books. Those might be aimed at
the tween set but the makeupÂ’s aimed at a more sophisticated clientele.
How do you wear it? Well, if the makeup artists at these same fashion shows have anything to say about it, youÂ’re meant to pair it with crazy violet eye makeup or deeply smokey eyes. However, for real life off the runway, wear it with little else. Burgundy lips can take a slight flush of the cheeks and natural eyes (a flick of mascara or none at all) or a hint of bronzer. To keep it from feathering and fading try fade-proof formulas or high-pigment lipsticks. Avoid lipglosses as theyÂ’ll simply wipe right off. If you want less of a saturated, gothic pout, you can also opt for a deep wine-red lip stain. Dab it in just the middle of the lip for a super fashionable look.
Our top 6 picks:
1. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Black Cherry – This color was created for Revlon by a London makeup artist a few years ago. ItÂ’s been in my makeup case ever since. ItÂ’s a super flattering burgundy red. Layer it for a saturated dark lip or blot it on with your finger and lip balm to create a suitably sheer plummy lip. The formulaÂ’s non-drying, so no worries about flaking lips underneath all that color.
2. Nars Pure Matte Lipstick in Volga – This is a deep eggplant that launched this fall. ItÂ’s a high-pigment, matte lipstick in a handily slim tube. ItÂ’s not as drying as a true matte lipstick but itÂ’ll stay put like one. Flattering with just a touch of blush and red hair, if youÂ’re going that way this fall.
3. MAC Venomous Villain Lipstick in Dark Deed – From MACs latest collaboration with Disney villains itÂ’s a seriously sinister deep plum-red. Save this for after dark. The motif on the packaging is unfortunate, but the product inside is assuredly high-quality like most MAC products. Be sure to exfoliate your lips before you apply because MAC lipsticks can be drying.
4. Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Nocturnal — This too launched just this fall. ItÂ’s the newest product from luxury mineral range Hourglass, so you know you wonÂ’t be ingesting any nasties if you bite into a sandwich wearing this. ItÂ’s super creamy and moisturising but with a dense enough pigment to give you as deep and dark a purple-burgundy as you would get with many of the other more synthetic, professional ranges.
5. Jemma Kidd Make-Up School Ultimate Lipstick Duo in Cleopatra — Jemma Kidd makes some of our favourite products and this is no exception. A deep burgundy lipstick on one end, thereÂ’s a balm on the other end so you have the ability to dial up or dial down the volume on your burgundy lips by simply flipping the tube over. The formula is rich and creamy, infused with Vitamin E to make sure your lips stay moisturized even during the winter, when youÂ’ll no doubt be sporting such a dark lip.
6. Liptini Lip Stain in Cherry Brandy — If youÂ’re not ready for an all out burgundy lipstick AND you canÂ’t stand the way glosses just slide right off your lips, then try a lip stain. Few brands carry lip stains in a slew of colors, but Liptini does. In fact, they probably have the biggest range. Put on just one layer for a gentle burgundy blush or let each layer dry and apply another for a more saturated stain that will stay put. And you can layer balm or gloss (which youÂ’ll need as they can be drying) over it without fear of the color disappearing.
Any single one of these can be used as a blush too if youÂ’re on the go. Simply rub a bit onto the pad of your finger and dab on the apples of your cheeks. Blend in the light dab of color with a clean finger and youÂ’ll be sorted.
