I love looking glam as much as the next girl, but sometimes itÂ’s time to unleash your inner-antagonist. ThatÂ’s
why I’m all about one of the season’s hottest trends: tough fashion with the occasional girlie touch for a look that’s anything but quiet compliance.
The rules? Live in all-black. Step out in leather and lace. Throw in a dash of stud detailing. Then add a hint of ostentatious edge to put those wannabe rockers to shame. Crank up your wardrobe with pieces fit for a rebel princess. HereÂ’s what to add.
Leather jacket. A leather jacket is the edgy girlÂ’s essential piece. ItÂ’s in the rebel handbook. So find one that fits perfectly. It should be hit right at the waist and be tailored, not tight. Basic black is always a winner, but a great chocolate brown is a nice variation. Wear it with anything. Throw it on over a cocktail dress for instant flair or pair it with cigarette pants, an oversize, white tee and mixed metal jewels for enviable ease.
Studs. Studs are the easiest way to incorporate a little tough-chic style into your look because there are so many options. Get a pair of studded heels or boots, a bejeweled belt, or a bag with metal detailing. Bonus points if the studded item is also leather, which will take any piece from cool to crave-inducing. Just have fun with it.
Over-the-knee boots. This style is back again this season, and looking awesome as ever. I suggest a black hue for the over-the-knee look; youÂ’ll get the most mileage out of the basic shade. Pick a pair that most suits your lifestyle, whether the boots are flat, heeled or wedged, and then throw them on with skinnies, tights or a skirt. TheyÂ’ll keep you looking flawless and keep you warm, which is always the perfect cold-weather combo.
Mixed metals. The jewelry must-have for the mischievous look? Mixed metals. Wear gold, silver, gunmetal—throw on any and all types. It should evoke that “I don’t care” look. Chain necklaces in layers are best, and piles of bangle bracelets will add just the right amount of flair. Wear it with a ball gown or plain white tee. Anything goes.
Lace. Girly lace is suddenly tough when paired with the right pieces; just make sure itÂ’s black. Pair a lace top with a leather jacket, biker boots and feminine mini (adorned with bows or sequins, perhaps?) for a play on hard and soft, or add in an unexpected pair of lace gloves for a ridiculously cool-chic vibe. The best way to work this look is monochromatic, so go back to black. All black.
This season, itÂ’s easy to be a rebel. Toughen up your party dress with a leather jacket, sport an armful of metal, slide into some edgy boots, and then own the room.
Just donÂ’t forget your matching confidence.
