High Fructose Corn Syrup by Any Other Means is still…HCFS

Watching your weight? You’ll have a new ingredient to look out for on ingredient lists then because High Fructose Corn Syrup is being re-named Corn Sugar.

The fact is that America eats way too much of every type of sugar, including HCFS and there’s a huge problem with the nation’s ever-expanding waistline.

Studies over the years claimed that HCFS was no worse than regular sugar (I donÂ’t have the data on who funded those studies), but a recent (March 2010) Princeton University study linked consumption of HCFS to considerably higher weight gain than diets where the same amount of calories are consumed, but the subjects ate regular sugar instead.

So there is evidence that says HFCS is worse for you than regular sugar, and the CRA is acting fast to drop the offending moniker altogether in attempts to get more people on board with consuming it. Corn sugar just sounds so, well, healthy and natural compared to High Fructose Corn Syrup, doesn’t it? Since 1970 thereÂ’s been a 1000% increase in the consumption of the stuff and in that same time, obesity has sky rocketed in the US. Causation or correlation? Not my place to say.

One thingÂ’s for sure, no matter what itÂ’s called, HCFS will always be a part of the American diet because of itÂ’s cheap price, ease of production and ubiquity (what else are they going to do with all those corn by-products?).

What do you think about renaming High Fructose Corn Syrup, especially in light of the recent Princeton study? Think itÂ’s shady? Or just good marketing? Whatever you think, at the very least clock it so that you don’t accidentally sabotage your dieting efforts.
