Crazy Fitness Trends That Really Work

Are you tired of religiously hitting the treadmill without seeing results? Are you bored to tears swimming laps? How about yawning like mad during your Hatha Yoga class? Me too. But there are plenty of novel ways to exercise. Here’s our pick of the strangest/coolest right now:

Stand-up Paddle Boarding

On Long Island this weekend I saw more than a few old-school Land Rovers trundle down GreenportÂ’s Front Street with the long, finned with boards affixed to the roofs. Surf boards, they were not (the accompanying paddle gave it away). From Jennifer Aniston to Cindy Crawford and thousands of regular folk, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP to the insiders) is a fast growing trend. What is it? Started in Hawaii in the 1950s as a way for surf instructors to coral their students, itÂ’s now seen everywhere from LA to Lake Michigan, Long Island and even, as seen in The Daily Mail last week, LondonÂ’s Thames River! ItÂ’s an incredible arm, core and leg workout that hones your balance and helps you find your inner zen by standing up on a long board and scooting around lakes, rivers or gentle sea waves.

Yoga Booty Ballet

My first foray into YBB was enlightening. A fusion of yoga, dance and ballet, it is a gentle cardio workout that improves strength and rhythm. The non-dancers feel a bit inhibited about dance, but that melts away with every pony step that passes. The dance elements work your core, legs and abs, yoga quiets your mind and the ballet elements help strengthen auxiliary muscles and balance. ItÂ’s easy enough for everyone to do, loads of fun and a superb change from the mundane nightly treadmill run.

Caponyasa

Part yoga, part Brazilian dance-martial arts, Caponyasa gets your heart pumping, lungs burning and promises to leave you both stronger and more limber than when you started. This intense class will please those who really like to sweat and, like YBB, itÂ’s great for winter workouts because itÂ’s indoors. Not for those new to exercise (or donÂ’t live next to a David Barton gym, for now) but a sure fat burner once you get the hang of it!

Body Weight Exercise

No need to hit the gym for this one. While it’s not exactly crazy it is definitely outside the realm of what people consider normal nowadays, unless over the age of 70, from the former USSR or a fan of bootcamp. Combining quick bursts of resistance exercise using your own body weight with cardio in-place, you can complete an entire exercise routine in your living room in the time it takes to do the dishes… or browse TMZ! Old-school elements like burpies, squats, plank, high knees, lunges and mountain climbers will give you an amazing all-over body workout that strengthens everywhere and has your lungs on fire.
