Crop Tops Make a Comeback

Now in California that itÂ’s finally warmed up (up to 110 degrees where I go to school), I just want to wear all the summer clothes IÂ’ve been thinking about wearing but havenÂ’t had the chance to yet. I mentioned in another blog post about how fun it is to play with proportions this summer in the heat. And I realized that perhaps I needed to explain more about one item of clothing I mentioned in that post in particular: the crop top.

Ah, the crop top. A major part of me wonders why weÂ’re wearing crop tops again. They seem straight from the ’80s and in the most dated way. Though on the other hand, perhaps a bigger part of me wonders why I didnÂ’t put on a crop top five years ago and never take it off. To me, crop tops are the ultimate clothing celebration of youth. Primarily the young or the youthful are those who are wearing crop tops and to me thereÂ’s nothing that says youth like showing off a flat, toned stomach.

Though despite the perception that crop tops are difficult to wear, with the right choosing they can be pretty flattering. Though the traditional crop top shows a lot of skin, stopping right beneath the bra, crop tops right now are being made in a variety of different styles. Instead of the basic high crop top, you can get some that fall just above or just at the top of jeans. Additionally, todayÂ’s crop tops often have longer back hems, keeping with the asymmetrical trend going on.

And some of these styles are incredibly cool and modern updates on the ’80s look. For example, just this past weekend at H&M I bought a crop top that was a cropped version of button down shirt. With a long back and a short front, it was so cool!

So if you havenÂ’t already tried out this trend, go for it this summer. Pick a length that works for you, whether itÂ’s super short or slightly longer, and then keep the rest of your look simpler so as to not overdo it. If you donÂ’t feel comfortable rocking the crop top with all your skin showing, try wearing a looser crop top over a tighter tank top. It will still give the look of a crop top, without taking you out of your comfort zone.

Would you wear a crop top this summer?

I would wear this flowery top with jeans, but I would layer the top with a solid tank under it pulling a color that I could use for eye color so that the crop is highlighted as are my eyes. Gold rimmed aviators would look great on top of my head. High heel shoes or sandals. Then the bracelets layered on my right wrist with a large watch on my left wrist.

Finally I can buy crop tops at the store instead of cutting up my old t-shirts. Sometimes I’m a bit shy showing a little tummy so I cover it with a pair of high-waist shorts/pants/skirt. Its slimming and elongating!
