I will admit that recently IÂ’ve bought quite a few ridiculous items of clothing. I tried on a new pair of wedges I scored on Gilt for my mother and she said I looked absurdly trendy. As
she recoiled from the shoes she managed to ask, “Where will you wear those? How can you wear that to class? Everyone at your college does not care about fashion.”
And perhaps, she did have a point (though to clarify, IÂ’ve never once worn heels of any kind to class and these new crazy wedges were not going to be the first!). People in college dress for their own culture: at no other time will it ever be appropriate to wear pajamas to class. But if any of you readers out there are college students, or are soon to be college students, you know that you can dress up more than pajamas.
In my experience, I found there to be two major categories of clothing needed for college life (and this leaves out business wear as well as many other occasion wear). These two types: day clothing/clothing for class and “going out” clothing.
For typical daytime wear, most people stick to wear jeans. And everyone I know in college owns a lot of jeans! They then pair jeans with a tank top or other decently simple cotton top. And for me personally, I find I always need a sweater. Even if itÂ’s super hot outside, in the classrooms a cardigan is an absolute essential.
But in southern California, where I attend college, sometimes it gets so hot outside that jeans become unthinkable. At my school, I see more girls wear cotton dresses or other basic dresses to combat the heat. As well as a lot of sandals and flip-flops.
At night, however, the “going out” looks emerge and girls often wear nicer tops and sometimes heels, depending on the night. In particular I’ve noticed that the girls at my college tend to prefer flowy, voluminous tops to wear with jeans when going out. Most girls also wear dresses sometimes, but more only for special events.
Though I enjoy the low amount of pressure to dress half-decently during the day, I wish more people would wear things that were a little more fun. I donÂ’t understand why girls make a drastic switch from bad clothing to nice clothing on the weekend when, at my small college, they see the same people all days. I wish people would take more clothing risks, especially because weÂ’re young and now is the time to seize the day in terms of fashion. But in truth I guess, I just want people to wear whatever their hearts desire! DonÂ’t be afraid to take fashion risks just because no one else is taking them!
What do you wear every day?

I know exactly how you feel…I also go to college in California so I know what the norm is…but from time to time I’m tempted to throw on a statement shoe/heel to school for the hell of it, but then that spontanious thrill quickly turns into self conscious thoughts of “oh god what if i become the girl people secretly stare at thinking “who does she think she is??!” … I am totally there with you though… I wish people at school would take more creative risks too, so that I in turn can feel some sense of inspiration…
I’m from southamerica (so far away!) and I thought that you at school were more fashionable than us. But now I realized that is pretty much the same thing here and everywhere. In my school we have to wear an uniform, but I’m a senior so we got a lot of days to wear anything, and when I dress up a little bit for school the others makes fun about it. And when I go out, sometimes I use heels or ankle high boots and people, coz they don’t care about fashion, makes me feel as if I haven’t fashion sense at all!
Dressing for school is a downer. I get up early and go to the gym. Then it’s off to class with my workout clothes, tennis shoes and backpack, I never bother to change. I just don’t have the time or interest. I think that is sends a bad message, like I could careless about what you think of me. I think that’s ok, most students are to busy to pay attention to minor fashion do and don’t to form any kind of opinion.
I agree with the rest of you guys. Maybe it’s just a student thing? My new years resolution is to get out of a “clothes rut” and dress a bit more fun. Personally when I look put together I feel more willing to get things done because being in sweats all day just make me lazy since they are just too comfortable for their own good.
