Is Friendship Jewelry Back in Style?

Do you remember way back when you and your friends used to make friendship bracelets? I remember having tons and tons of embroidery floss, always ready to make a cool colored bracelet for a friend.

And as weÂ’ve seen in 2010, friendship bracelets do not have to go away once youÂ’re an adult. Friendship bracelets are now (or perhaps for the first time) back in style. But luckily friendship bracelets have received an updated makeover and are no longer just bright floss twined together.

For starters, even J.Crew is getting in this trend. It was reported this week that the brand will be partnering with jewelry company Frieda & Nellie to create these new accessories for fall. The new bracelets are each one of kind and they include rhinestones and metal thread woven throughout (though the bracelets do still use classic colored thread).

The collection also includes vintage links and knots to give the bracelets an extra J.Crew feel. Though these bracelets seem pretty cool and modern, theyÂ’re attached to a pretty steep price tag; the bracelets are being sold from $130-250, which is probably more than at least I am willing to spend.

But I was taken by the friendship bracelet trend as I’ve seen other designer envision it. A few months ago my friends and I exchanged friendship necklaces – but not ones we made ourselves! We each exchanged gold and silver necklaces with a wing charm on them. I think they’re not only very pretty, but also a really sweet idea to know that my friends “gave me wings.” It also seems nice to me to have jewelry exchanged by friends, as it’s something I can always hold on to and will never want to throw out (unlike after a breakup, when I just want to toss all the jewelry that reminds me of bad times with an ex-boyfriend).

Though my friends and I bought these wing necklaces that were technically packaged as a “friendship necklace” set, the same idea could occur with just finding any multiples of an item of jewelry that you all love and want to wear. For example, I think this Fortune Necklace by Gorjana for $84.00 would be really fun to share with friends.

You could also try making your own friendship bracelets or necklaces with your friends again, which would help relive the golden years as well as cut down on costs. But whatever you decide to do, definitely revisit the fun of friendship jewelry this year.

What are your thoughts? Do you wear friendship jewelry?
