Though lace has often been associated with either brides or lingerie, lace in 2010 is breaking free of these stigmas and is finally becoming cool. Lace has been around for years and has long been connected with femininity. But why has lace become so popular now, when the majority of our current fashion trends are menswear inspired?
Well, perhaps the resurgence of lace is due to all these masculine looks! Nothing looks better than a girly, delicate lace paired against something tougher, like bright metal jewelry, leather, or a blazer. Many of today’s trendy lace pieces are also specifically designed to incorporate the contrast between fragile lace and utilitarian style.
Personally, I’ve always had a difficult time trying to wear lace. Most of the lace things I own are so ultra-feminine that I find them difficult to wear very often or even difficult to pair with other less-girly pieces of clothing.
But this summer, I’m hoping to change all that and try wearing lace in a totally new way. Here are some the top three coolest ways to wear lace this summer:
1. The Lace Jacket. This piece combines the tailored, structured look of menswear with the softness of lace. Many lace jackets are also offset with bright metal zippers and hooks. The two most popular colors of lace jackets are white and black, and though a black jacket may be easier to transitionally wear in the fall, I think a white lace jacket look perfect in the summertime. Try pairing your lace jacket with jeans and basic tee shirt and a relaxed summer sandal. Or for an edgier look, wear your lace jacket over some neutral colored shorts and chain belt to give your outfit a more urban feel.
2. The Lace-Backed Tee Shirt or Tank Top. Now this is one part of the trend that everyone can try! Even if you are just a basic tee shirt girl who doesn’t like to wear anything outrageous, a lace-backed tee shirt can really add a punch to your basic casual outfits. A lace-backed tee adds a special detail to any outfit and can be an easy step to try a new trend. Pair a lace tee with basic jeans or denim cut-offs for a sweet but surprising summer look.
3. A Lace Shoe. Though these can be slightly more difficult to find, look for a girly lace shoe. Many sandals or clogs are being made this season with crocheted lace panels. Though you need to be bold to wear them, they really are very chic and completely appropriate for the hot weather. Try wearing a lace shoe in white to really emphasize the style.
What do you this of this summer’s laces? How do you wear them?
