Confront Imperfections: Don’t Fear the Mirror

I just had an unfortunate run-in with a friend’s mirror. I’m staying at her house for a few days, and I came across her magnifying mirror with a back light. I thought “hey, I’ve been so tired from work for the past few days, I haven’t really been taking care of my skin to the best of my abilities.Maybe I should take a quick peek and…OH WOW!”

Yes, of course, the shock of looking at your skin and pores magnified probably about 50 times is absolutely terrifying. Freckles begin to look green and gray, your skin gives off a mottled look, every hair looking like an evil protruding dash along your chin and forehead. Eek! How to manage? How to deal?

I take a deep breath and look back at the mirror. You know, in a way it’s nice to see everything so magnified: makes plucking so much easier, makes makeup removal so much more accurate. There are plenty of benefits to using a magnifying mirror, and what’s nice is that if you use it, you have the benefit of looking that much more radiant when you look away from the mirror.

If you don’t shy away from your imperfections and instead take them on at face-value at an exposure and distance so much closer than everyday interaction, you will look 50 times better in an everyday interaction!

So carry mirrors with you so others don’t have to tell you about unfortunate makeup mishaps. Carry with you a little pocket mirror to reapply makeup and touch up nasty pimples on the go. And give yourself an arsenal in the bathroom: get a backlit mirror with magnification. Yes it’s a little intimidating, but you’ll feel so much more in control, and you will be in so much better control, when you can see that much clearer. You’re worth it !

Yes, a mirror is your best friend (whether you like it or not). But like Colleen says, carrying one can save yourself makeup embarrassments. At least you’ll be able to spot the problem before someone points it out. I carry a small pocket mirror with me all the time (and have a larger 2-sided mirror in my kit).
