Freshening up in the Summer: Don’t Sweat It

The horrors of living in an apartment with no air conditioning: you wake up and you’re already sweaty and smelly. You take a shower, and it feels wonderful to cool down, feel your wet hair against your back – delightful! But it doesn’t take long for the sweat to start up again: if you’re like me, you try in vain to blow dry your hair, but it only causes you to sweat in your steamy bathroom.

Now there you are, beautiful hair, but a red, sweaty face and no desire to put on real clothing. All you want to do is take another shower. While I could try to give tips about staying cool this summer and ways to style your hair without using heat, we will save that topic for another day!

Right now, let’s talk about a more pressing matter: we can all put our hair up in a ponytail if the sun and heat is just too much, but we can’t do anything about the smell of sweat when we’re on the go or in the office. Here are some on-the-go tips for freshening up and keeping yourself smelling sweet. I like to call it the freshen up pack. Here are the essentials:

1. Oil face blotters. I’ve been relying on these a lot recently, apologies for the repeats in past lists! But I can’t get enough of them. There’s nothing that says summer more than makeup dripping down your face: try to go sheer and minimal with the makeup, especially if you’re going outdoors or doing something athletic. Instead, freshen up with some light powder and use the oil face blotters to keep the beady sweat from running down your face.

2. Travel-size deodorant. Absolute must, the number one thing to grab for if you don’t have time to shower or if the bus breaks down and you need to walk to work.

3. Freshen fruit spray. Just a small, travel-size spray that you can give yourself a quick spritz with before you enter the office. Two places to spray: a little on the back of your head, and a little between your tummy and chest. Probably a bit uncouth of places to spray, but you’re covering all of your angles, giving your hair a little boost of sweet smell if you didn’t get a chance to wash it thoroughly that morning, and giving your whole body a nice mist from head to toe coverage without it being overpowering. Sometimes when you spray it on your wrist or neck (which I recommend for more romantic evenings and intimate situations) your smell is just a little too powerful for the work office.

Best of luck, and look forward to an upcoming post about hair styling techniques that don’t take the heat!
