Fashion Rules You Should Forget

There are some fashion rules you should never break: never wear denim on denim, never show panty lines, never wear white to another person’s wedding, & never buy clothes that don’t fit you properly. But there are many supposed fashion “rules” that in reality can be broken. As long as you dress with care, none of the following fashion rules you’ve heard should limit your wardrobe.

Rule: Never wear gold and silver jewelry together.
Truth: You can definitely mix gold and silver together!
Just make sure that you wear a number of different pieces of jewelry so the mixed metal look is defined. If youÂ’re wearing only two delicate things, try to stick to either silver or gold. Otherwise, at least try to wear the same type of metal in the same area of the body: wear either gold or silver for both rings and bracelets and then the other metal for both earrings and necklaces. Today, however, it is common to find mixed-metal jewelry, which breaks even these slim guidelines. Basically, mix gold and silver with careful attention to achieve a put-together look.

Rule: Never wear black and blue together.
Truth: Always try mixing black and blue together!
This is actually one  of my favorite color combinations to wear. I think that because black and dark blue can look somewhat similar, the unexpected mixing of the colors can make an outfit look extremely chic. If you are wearing the two colors in separates (for example: a black jacket and dark blue jeans), try to use white or another neutral piece to accent the contrast between black and blue (such as wearing a white shirt with the previously mentioned outfit). Although mixing black and blue is very fashionable, make sure that you don’t just get lazy and try to pass off navy as black or vice versa. A more formal outfit that mixes black and blue randomly does not look good.

Rule: Never mix one pattern with another, different pattern.
Truth: Mixing patterns can be incredibly fun
and is very in style this season. Although you might think this wouldnÂ’t work, mixing patterns can actually really bring out the different styles. Just try to keep the different patterns in the same color family so that they still blend while remaining distinct. You can also try mixing stripes with floral print, as itÂ’s one of this summerÂ’s hottest looks. Try a striped top with a floral skirt, or a striped jacket over a floral dress.

What do you think? What fashion rules do you break?

I agree with everything but one in this article. The rule of never wearing denim on denim can be broken too. See Jessica Schroeder’s blog entry. She looks fantastic in this denim on denim look.

Break the rule is quite interesting. I also have the same view, i.e breaking the rules always.

Vicky is right in commenting that Denim on Denim looks quite good.
