Harem Pants: How to Wear

Harem pants have been trendy for the last few seasons. These big billowy pants are a part of the greater voluminous clothing trend that fashionistas everywhere are using to play with proportion. These pants many not be for you because they can add extra weight and size to some frames. But with a few key tips, you can find the right pair of harem pants for your body type and your style.

1. Harem pants are being made right now in a wide variety of materials and fabrics, but you need to be very careful about which you choose. Silk, chiffon, and other lighter fabrics are probably the easiest to wear. They look appropriately dressed up for this trend, but have the right amount of “flow” to them. Harem pants made of linen, rigid cotton, or t-shirt style soft cotton can all be very hard to pull off. These fabrics tend not to drape very well or hold up through multiple wears.

2. Look for the right cut and fit in the waist. Some harem pants have a very big sag of fabric that drapes from your waist to halfway to your thigh. This style is unflattering on even the thinnest people. Make sure you find harem pants without this saggy fabric, that have nice lines and cuts to not overemphasize your waist.

3. Make sure you wear slim-fitting tops in order to highlight the billowing harem pants. By balancing the bigger pants with a body-conscious top, you will show off the style of the harem pants and still show your body.

4. Wear heels with harem pants. The extra length provided by heels will help make you appear thin amidst the fabric. Heels will elongate your legs and make the harem pants look more proportionate and balanced. Also keep your jewelry and other accessories muted and to a minimum. When you wear harem pants, they really are the key piece of the outfit and will make you stand out enough already. If you try to wear too many other colorful statement pieces, your look will be far overdone.

5. Choose black harem pants. Though normally I would advise people to pick brighter colors, this look can truly be hard to pull off so black is perhaps the easiest to wear, most slimming, and looks the most luxurious. Beware of tie-dye print harem parents, as they are nearly impossible to wear.
