The Look:
As the weather starts to warm up, this sophomore music major from the New School embraces spring with playful colors and fabrics. This stylish student experiments with trends while remaining true to her favorite decade for fashion: the ’40s. GraceÂ’s knit vintage dress makes her stand out from the crowd. She demonstrates that you can wear vintage full cut items
while still make them flatter your body by cinching your waist.
Grace throws on a black leather high-waist belt over her dress in order to give her body shape against all that purple fabric. Notice that the dress is also very high-necked: if you want to try a dress that goes up this high, make sure to highlight your waist like Grace has done, otherwise youÂ’ll look like a blob of fabric!
GraceÂ’s knee-length, oversize camel-colored jacket and polka dot tights serve to modernize her otherwise retro look. By matching the length of the jacket with the hem of the dress, she looks fun and youthful. Her polka dot tights also add an extra level of interest to her outfit. Finally, GraceÂ’s sweet, open-toe purple flats add an extra kick of color to her look and make the outfit truly something special.
Make it Yours:
If you love a certain decadeÂ’s fashion, let that special style help you to guide your look. Just make sure you donÂ’t look too much like that decade by updating your look with trendier pieces.
- If you love the forties like Grace, go for a retro dress but balance it out with an oversize blazer or military jacket.
- Keep it even more modern by making the hemlines of the dress and the jacket match up to elongate your body and help to streamline any bulkiness.
- Also, experiment with color. This seasonÂ’s trendy neutrals like white, beige, and brown can accompany nearly every other color. If you want to wear an extreme color, balance it out by making the rest of your outfit neutral colors to keep your look current.
- Finally, look for shoes in fun colors to add an extra level of intrigue to your outfit. Colorful shoes make an outfit special and show that you really thought about your look.
