Seasonal Skin: Moisturizer Madness

The weather is still chilly, and the indoors are heated with the help of a thermostat and heating appliances. If your skin is like mine (normal/combination), then it has developed into dry skin during the winter season. My skin was becoming scaly (almost identical to my vintage leather hobo bag) and dry due to the lack of moisture on my face. The skin cells have developed a barrier of skin layers that need to be sloughed away madly, truly, and deeply.

So what do I do? Moisturize.. moisturize… moisturize! Check out some quick tips to keep your skin feeling smooth and hydrated with moisturizers:

  • Urea, glycerin and alpha hydroxy acids are Humectants found in moisturizing lotions. This helps absorb water from the air you are exposed to, and keep your skin hydrated
  • Lanolin, mineral oil or petrolatum are Emollients also found in moisturizers. The oily substance helps fill in spaces in between the skin cells, helping your skin to look more smooth and wrinkle-free
  • Moisturizing lotions are to be used on a regular basis during your daily skin care regimen (skipping this ritual can mess up your skin’s chemical Moisturizerbalance instantly)
  • Removing dead skin cells first with a facial scrub or skin loofah (done on a weekly basis) will help prep skin for moisturizing
  • If you have acne prone or oily skin, consider oil free moisturizers with blemish control ingredients that are noncomedogenic (developed to prevent clogging pores)
  • Enjoy the relaxation and hydrating effects of a moisturizing mask (every two weeks is ideal), and it’s fun to do with a friend
  • Invest in a different moisturize for your eyes. This is thin delicate skin that requires special treatment and other active ingredients
  • Eating a balanced diet helps moisturize your skin from the inside out: healthy eating habits reflect your physical appearance
  • Moisturizing is not just for women: men should also moisturize as it helps hydration of the skin and cell regeneration (your man’s face is not only for kissing, so keep it supple with moisturizing lotion!)

It is important we keep our skin looking young and healthy. Besides the moisturizing products, it is important we monitor our eating habits and lifestyles. And don’t forget your daily 8 glasses of water! To good skin… CHEERS!

  1. I also run a humidifier at night when I sleep to combat the effects of the heater. I have been doing this for about three weeks and have noticed a difference. I no longer wake up with my face feeling tight and dry.

  2. I agree! And drink a lot of water!
