Definine Your Style: Basic Short Dresses

Every outfit should be dependent on where you are going, and the occasion of this event to take place. We always want to remain comfortable in our environment. Being overly dressed or not as done-up, makes us feel socially unaccepted in our settings. Psychologically we are concerned about how we will look, our character determines the style we want to portray, and the way we feel helps us make our personal selections. The power of a woman and style is indefinite, we can not only hide our emotions with a smile, but we can also disguise it within our ensemble. dressUsually when you are feeling sick, or not as confident with yourself, it is advisable to dress up a little more than usual (first impression is always key). With my varying moods (I have more moods than a mood ring has to offer), my selection of style is ever changing depending on how I am feeling at that time.

Sometimes when feeling down or not so hot (positive energy from others or myself is needed),  I will wear a statement piece of jewelry (something different or that holds sentimental value) that will certainly attract attention or keep me positive when I look into the mirror. When I am feeling daring, I will go with a ultra trendy outfit that will help me set the standards with a fashion trend on the streets (starting a new trend or simply making it my own). To generalize the different looks, I would transcend these moods into 5 style categories: classic, chic, whimsical, bohemian and avant-garde.

Let’s take a simple article of clothing like a basic short dress (i.e. A-line, wrap dress, strapless, flared, solid color or subtle prints, etc.), now read how I would accessorize the same dress with the 5 different mood styles:

Classic: This look is acceptable and always appropriate wherever you go. Perfect for work or for a Sunday afternoon, this style is timeless and simple. With a short dress, I would match some black tights and some classic black pumps. And effortlessly layer it over with a cardigan piece or white oxford shirt and tie up the front. Finish this look off with a pearl stranded necklace.

Chic: This type of look is more feminine and elegant. It is similar to the classic style but has a little more focus on trendy looks and garment pieces. With a short dress, I would match this with some snake print, or crocodile style pumps. And style a long necklace over it, with a tailored blazer jacket for flair.

Whimsical: This style type is very girly and romantic. With playful prints and garment pieces used, this type of look is a unique style of its own (helpful to use a lot of vintage accessories). With a short dress, I would match this with bold floral silk scarf to tie around my neck or elaborate pendant necklaces. Adding a nice vintage skinny belt will be most flattering for this look. And a wide brimmed straw hat as the finishing touch-perfect for a walk in the garden or day trip…and don’t forget the strappy sandals!

Bohemian: This look is very free spirited with funky mix-n-match pieces. With flowy fabrics and draping details, this hippy style is a relaxed yet lived-in style.  With a short dress, I would match this with an ethnic printed shawl and/or denim vest and wedge platforms for a 70′s feel. Feather or ivory jewelry (natural looking pieces) are best to accessorize this style ensemble.

Avant-garde: This bold style is more the daring and cutting edge. For the woman that wants to make a statement or stand out in the crowd, this look is for her.  With a short dress, I would match this with some fishnet stockings and stiletto pumps or knee high boots. Layering a faux fur jacket will certainly add a luxury look. Accessorize with statement jewelry in golds and silver tones, and do not forget the diamonds and extra bling.

Being able to mix the different styles enables you to express yourself and to create a unique look for your wardrobe. Being confident and creative are the key factors to define a good sense of style. What mood or look are you into right now?
