Keep Your Holiday Sweaters New with Fabric Shavers

Winter is my favorite fashion season. I live in Southern California, so I don’t need to get super bundled up, but I love wearing my soft sweaters, wool-blend coats, vests, knit scarves, leggings, and boots. Of course, I have about fifty designer hoodies. I could probably fill a 5 X 10 storage unit with the winter clothes that I’ve collected over the years. I pulled out my first box of sweaters the other day, and I was sad to see that a bunch of them, especially my rayon, polyester, and organic cotton blends had started to pill.

Pilling occurs when tiny balls of fabric form on your clothes. In general, pilling tends to occur more with knits and woven fabrics. I was so bummed because I had to throw my sweaters away.

I really love my sweaters, so I tried to find a way to save them. My searching led me to a cool device called a fabric shaver that safely removes all little fiber balls. My sweaters look great, and I’ll definitely get some more life out of them.

There are a range of fabric shavers available at prices varying from $8 to $30. I bought the Remington Fuzz Away Pro (below) for $8, and it works just fine. I use it on my yoga pants, leggings, hoodies, tee shirts, and sweaters.
