The Quest for Cleopatra Eyes that Do NOT Bleed!

Cleopatra Eyes - Kohl Eyeliner - Cosmetics

Here’s the question, What type of 1950′s beauty icon are you?

Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor?

As for me I am team Taylor. I love Marilyn but the whole busty, wispy voiced bombshell vibe got her nothing but heartache and premature death. Whereas Elizabeth’s stunning classic look of silky raven hair, creamy skin and VIOLET eyes garnered her endless marriages and jewelry, jewelry jewlery!!

You could almost say that the two icons are a metaphor for life. What kind of girl are you?

Well that said, I have always wanted to emulate Elizabeth Taylor’s eyes in Cleopatra. Poopy part is I am Asian so I am genetically disadvantaged from replicating the look. Plus all my life whenever I have attempted the smoky eyed look, every kohl eyeliner that I have ever tried bleeds like crazy.

Cleopatra Eyes - Bleeding eyeliner on Asian Eyes

Like raccoon eye bleeding! When I leave the house it’s nice and pretty and blended…fast forward 2 hours, charcoal bleeding everywhere. Looks like someone dipped their fists in firewood ashes and sucker punched me in both eyes.

Now I am not trying to achieve anything as dramatic as these two looks but in general when I attempt the swept charcoal look it always turns out a disaster.

Does anyone recommend an eyeliner, the variety that will not bleed? Or at least if it does bleed it does so gracefully and morphs into a smoky eyed deal?

Revlon used to make an amazing pencil liner that you had to wet yourself, and then it stayed perfect all day. Unfortunately, I don’t think they make it anymore. I did find it on e-bay, though; I believe it’s called wet/dry eyeliner. They might still have something along the same lines in their product line. I almost cried when i tried to buy it and couldn’t find it the other day.

I use a colorless loose powder and lightly dust my eyes, then i use a eyeliner brush/applicator dipped in water then in black eye shadow and apply to my top and bottom lash line. I let it dry then apply a water proof pencil over the shadow. Then lastly I put on a dry coat of eye shadow over the penciled lines. It stays very well. And if it looks too dark you can lightly powder your eyes with the loose powder, or use a lighter shade of shadow. Also, when I feel my eyeliner is perfected I dip my ring fingers in the loose powder, tap them to get rid of the excess and tap/apply under my lash line. This really helps the eyeliner stay in place. Hope this helps!

I don’t know if you’ve ever considered maybe going the liquid route instead? It’s what *I* ALWAYS do, I never use kohl. I use Christian Dior Diorshow eyeliner; it is SUPREMO, truly. Paint it on, it WON’T bleed. Just a suggestion! ;)

I like HIP High Intensity Pigments from L’Oreal. Both the stick liners and the pots of cream. Just need to leave a second or two for them to set and they don’t smudge too badly, if at all. When sharpening the sticks, be gentle or they break. Revlon has an eraser pen to remove mistakes and migrated liner without having to take off your whole face and redo. I keep one in my purse with a couple of q-tips just incase.

Also, I forgot to mention Benefit’s she laq. It waterproofs anything, and is truly amazing. It doesn’t feel fantastic at first, but it makes the makeup stay through it all.

Try Mac’s jet black eyeshadow and a thin slanted brush. Wet the brush (or eyeshadow) and apply with the brush along the eyes. It often stays perfect even overnight.

Have you tried Physicians Formula Felt Tip Eye Marker? Its like using a Sharpie on your eyes. I love my Black one! does not smudge at all lasts all day!

Urban Decay’s 24/7 liners are awesome! Very smooth and soft and lasted! I also ran into a good drugstore brand — Almay Eyeliner Pencil (I believe it’s waterproof) in a self-sharpening case. I wear contacts and have very sensitive eyes and they tend to water when irritated. I was able to do the smudged – smoky look with both pencils and both stayed put.

Urban Decay 24/7 glide on eye pencil…I use Two Faced Shadow Insurance first. Also use Shadow Insurance if I’m just wearing eyeliner and mascara. Works great!!

THE BEST eyeliner i have tried so far since I started using eyeliner at 12…is…

    SMUDGE POTS — BY STILA

This stuff does NOT budge yet when wiped off with a makeup wipe it comes off quite easily. This is a new product from STILA (check your local Sephoras for this…or go to http://www.sephora.com) Just get a nice angled eyeliner brush and you’re good to go. I purposely put some on at 10 pm, went to sleep and when I woke up…it was PERFECTLY untouched. no smears…no fading..nothing.

It retails for $18. I bought an the Sephora brand eyeliner brush for $18…plus tax it came to about $38

The BEST $38 my boyfriend has ever spent on me!! God Bless STILA.

While I generally enjoy your blog, I have to say I’m not a big fan of your comment that because you’re Asian you can’t pull off the Cleopatra look. I’m Asian and that comment perpetuates the stereotype that all Asian people look alike. We’re not all from East Asia.

  12. Back in the day I used Max Factor cake black eyeliner, a sable watercolor brush, and I “fixed” the outer eye part with transparent face powder (of which there are a billion kinds now). I have also used Maybelline liquid eyeliner, which works too. I’ve tried all the expensive or mid-priced brands, and sure they have great products. It’s sick to say, but the best eye brands for the price right now are HIP and the Maybelline – and I am getting to the age where I can’t wear dark colors any more without looking horrible. Also, I totally think you can do this look. Your eyes and face are gorgeous!! Look at the shape of your eyes and the placement of your pupils and irises. Compare to where her eyebrows come to a peak, and slant, and then extend outward. Your hair is mostly covering your brows in the picture, but it looks like where yours come to a peak is over the inner side of your pupils. Her brows come to a point farther toward the outer corner of her eyes. Try combing or using color to make your brows more in that shape, and extend them toward your temples, and see if that look is something you like.

Both were beautiful and charming but Liz’s eyes are uniques!

Eyeliner that stays in place and is low-cost:
Maybelline, the “old school” , two to a pack, wood red eyebrow pencil. LIGHTLY heat the tip with your blow-dryer or a lighter to soften it..apply, it dries and hardens, will not move until you take it off. These are the only ones that work all day. I like Black Velvet.

i hv the same problems as u… i’ve tried many eyeliners from the cheapest till the most expensive like MAC fluidline…. the best that won’t smudge at all is thefaceshop greatist liquid eyeliner, i recommend u to try it, seriously u won’t get that racoon eyes :)

  16. brittney says:

people tell me i look like Cleopatra. I don’t always believe it and I feel odd because I don’t know how to take a compliment like that. I heard that she was beautiful though. Maybe if I lost some weight I would feel better about such an honorary compliment. :D

  17. brittney says:

Oh! By the way, MAC put out a new eyeliner marker! I just bought it and it works wonders! You should try it! :)
