12,000 Calorie Daily Diet = Michael Phelps Abs, Yumm!

Ummm.. so call me fickle but one of the most inspiring tales to come out of the Beijing Olympics is the epiphany of Michael Phelps daily calorie intake and how he still manages to have those ABS!!

Yeah, yeah I know the man has honed his body to a chiseled dreamy swimming machine but still, the sheer volume and “type” of food that Phelps consumes is staggering by any standards.

Keep in mind that the average recommended daily calorie intake is 2,000 calories. He consumes 12,000!

Here’s the breakdown:

Breakfast: Three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions, and mayonnaise – two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelette, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes.

Lunch: a pound of enriched pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread, capping off the meal by chugging about 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

Dinner: carbohydrate-rich foods—such as a pound of pasta and an entire pizza—which give him plenty of energy for his five-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week regimen. He washes all that down with another 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.

Whoa!!

My point with all this is how amazing the human body is, like what a finely tuned machine it could become when necessary.  Granted his workout and diet are both EXTREME but the major lesson to walk away with is that you can allow yourself a few “extravagances” in diet as long as the ratio between “crap food” and “excercise” is 1:4. One part crap food, four parts exercise?

What do you guys think? Sound about right? Or is Michael Phelps just the exception to the rule?

P.S. – The lads face could use some work… but who is looking at his face! Hahahaha….

    The guy’s the best swimmer in the world, but that is one crappy diet.

    I understand all the carbs, but why so high in fat and low in protein?

    I think his genetics and young age are what allows him to get away with it. Imagine how much better he’d be if he consumed more healthy fats and more muscle rebuilding protein (while keeping the carbs the same).

  2. Wolfy, I agree with you partially.

    His genetics are probably playing an important role in his good/slim figure, but definitely not the main role (when considering his parents looks).

    I think that his genetics and age are what allows him to look so good and he’d definitely benefit from some more healthy fats and muscle rebuilding proteins.

    Um the reason Michael Phelps consumes so many calories in a day is because he burns about 10,000 in his vigorous two a day or more workouts. So if he eats 12,000 when burning 10,000 then he is actually on a regular 2,000 calorie a day diet. The reason he gets his calories through higher fat, higher protein and carb foods is because it would be impossible for a person to consume enough calories to sustain him and keep him from losing weight when eating only fruits and vegetables. He would have to eat even more massive amounts of food if they were the relatively heathy variety. He eats those foods because they are the fastest and most efficient way to get the calories he needs, otherwise it would be impossible to do. And Kyle, that dork you’re talking about is probably one of, if not the greatest athlete in the history of the world. I don’t think anyone should be making fun if him in any way, shape, or form. You try doing what he has done. Thats why he has rock hard abs and eats the food he does. It’s called hard work and the will to be the best. It’s called sacrifice and to give everything up to be the best you can possibly be, in this case which is the best in the world. That is what is amazing about Michael Phelps.

    I LOVE Michael. One of my swim team coaches went to collage (same dorm) with him. Here’s the answer to everyone’s question as to how he stays so slim and fit. First of all, his diet is not THAT crappy. While eggs have a lot of bad stuff in them, they have a good amount of protein in them which helps with his muscle mass. He would DIE if he didn’t consume the amount of calories he eats. Michael BURNS ALL OF THEM OFF! With his two and one half hour practices TWICE A DAY six times a week, I don’t understand what the big question is as to how he stays so slim. you can tell that it is probably not genetics (wink wink, nudge nudge.) Michael is not an exception to the rule that you have to eat healthy.

    ALSO, TO kyle, WHAT AMAZING STUFF HAVE YOU DONE LATLEY. A LITTLE JELOUS ARE YOU? GET OVER THAT AND GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR BUTT AND SNAP INTO REALITY. DORK OR NO DORK, HE IS FREAKIN AWESOME.

    That “wink, wink, nudge nudge” statement reads as if you’re a fan of Michael Phelps but also implies(quite strongly) that he’s not doing things in a totally above-the-board and ethical manner. I.E., using diuretics, steroids, masking agents,binging, purging,etc. and so forth.

    Furthermore, your claim that ‘Michael is not an exception to the rule that you have to eat healthy’ does noting but add to your implication.

    That’s a really dangerous implication that you’re making and if your defense to this criticism is that I’m ‘misreading your comments’, then that’s all the more reason to take this post literally. Which in my mind is nothing more than a back-handed compliment.

    ummmmmmm fyi do any of u guys ackuslly swim like he does cuz i do and i no how hard it it and i have abs two and im younger then him and its fine what he eats because u dont now how many calories he burns ever think of that if he didnt eat that much he may be dead so think how hard it is to swim and shut up about what he eats give him his props he rocks
