Pixie Cuts – Hit or Miss? Also, Can Big People Rock Them?

Hairstyles - Hits & Misses - Pixie Cut

I have a very mixed stance on the Pixie cut. Part of me thinks that women only rock this look if they are too lazy to do the whole blow dry and prep work involved with longer looks. But now that I am older, the idea seems “oh so welcoming”. No fuss, no muss.

Pixie Haircut - Winona Ryder - Reality Bites

The very first time I even entertained the idea was when I saw Winona Ryder in Reality Bites. Super cute!

Pixie Haircut - Mia Farrow - Rosemarys Baby

Despite the fact that she got hoodwinked into birthing the Anti-Christ, Mia Farrow’s hair was polished and sharp in Rosemary’s Baby…

Pixie Haircut -Natalie Portman - Celebrity Hairstyles

Personally if I had Natalie Portman’s face, I could shave my head and still be 100x more attractive than 90% of the population…

So there are prime examples of the Pixie Cut working! But here comes my next bit, do you see the common thread amongst these examples?

They are all petite TINY ladies! ( Go ahead look back up and check it out, am I right or what!) I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, the name of the cut has “Pixie” in it for Pete’s sake.

Which begs the question – Can big people sport the Pixie without looking like they shrunk their head? Have you ever seen a full-figured person with a Pixie cut? I am sitting here right now, racking my brain trying to think of an example, and God help me I can’t picture one..

I am probably wrong. Can you guys think of examples where the Pixie cut rocks on a normal slash larger person?

Yeah, Sharon Stone. She’s 5’9 just like me. When she cut off her hair she went from gorgeous to bombshell. Also Halle Berry..she’s tall and I think more of a knock out with short hair.

  2. Lady says:

I think she meant fat people.

She was just being nice about it.

Sharon Stone and Halle Berry are both skinny.

  3. April says:

omg, so true! I think it works only with thin arms. If you are too bulky around your chin and shoulders, then your head will look too small for your body!

  4. Lori says:

The best example I can think of is Mariska Hargitay. She’s not exactly thin, but then again, her hair is longer in front/sort of a pixie/bob hybrid.

But I agree- if you are too heavy in arms/shoulders and neck area then it will accent that.

  5. To have a pixie cut and rock it, you better have a face of a model. That’s the only way it will work. Otherwise, you’ll be looking pretty manly. I’m more of a modern bob chick. http://www.btwice.wordpress.com

  6. Karen says:

Well, if she meant fat okay. It really depends on your face. I have seen fat people who looked better with short hair and skinny people who didn’t. Face shape is really what determines it. If you’re skinny with a big jaw, then a cropped cut will look awful.

  7. Amber says:

Just an FYI, “fat” women would prefer to be called full-figured. Unless you don’t care about whose feelings you hurt.

But to be on topic– full figured women can wear the pixie if their facial features / shape are appropriate and you style it with the right product. I’m a hairstylist. I’m kind of offended by some of these comments.

  8. Juls says:

I think if a person is proportional it is ok. But if your face is small and your body is bigger it doesn’t look good. If you had a larger face it might look ok. My daughter has gastric bypass and has a pixie cut and it looks cute. I would look like a pin head. But if you have a lot of confidence, do it!

  9. Sonia says:

It’s all about the attitude! if u love it and are the bubbly outgoing type, then the pixie is gonna look great..
But if you go around complaining about it or say it looks like a guys then people around you will just mimic your words and call u ugley!

  10. A male says:

Yeah so I’m a guy and this is gonna piss you all off but im gonna say it anyway because its the damned truth. First and foremost, I LOVE pixie haircuts, its my prime preference. But pixie girls by definition in my mind are small and petite. The word pixie probably means like elf or something, and there are no fat elves. It’s a less feminine haircut that in effect says, “i’m little, cute, and girly enough to have a boys haircut, and still be this adorable”. When I see it on fat girls, it just looks insecure, instead it says “I don’t beleive I could be attractive no matter what, and I dont want to try and fail, so I’m not gonna try”.
But frankly, and this is what will really piss you off, the fatter girl is a little bit right with that because even with longer hair as a male I’m probably not gonna be very attracted to her anyway. She needs to eat healthy and excersize and get in shape and not spend time and money on goofy haircuts. If a girl is only a small bit heavier, and actually dolls her self up, she can have an olfashion beauty to her with the long hair look. Once shes fat she might as well shave her head.
    Cold hard truth.

  11. manda says:

i love the pixie cut! i think it’s a great, timeless style. i use it as a back-up style for when i don’t know what to do with my hair anymore. oh, and, yes, i am a shapely woman, and i think it looks great on me, as do my friends and family. :) so go for it!

  12. Smirffette says:

Um..how do you know there aren’t fat elves. Have you seen on in real life?

  13. stacie says:

hum? who said fat people would rather be called full figured? I’m 200 pounds.

I would much rather be called “fat”.

anyways. I want a pixie cut, but all of the fat people I know who have pixie cuts wound up looking like boys.

  14. dana says:

wow the stacie and a male are douches!!!

  15. Suzy says:

“Stacie” and “A Male” are hiiiiigh-larious! I had a pixie cut for years. I am 5’6 and weighed around 120 lbs. I always got tons of compliments on my hair, even from guys. Amazingly, there are a lot of guys out there that prefer short hair to long. But then I went through a time where I put on about 35 lbs., all of a sudden, the cut wasn’t so cute. So I started to grow my hair out. Shortly thereafter the weight came off and I went back to my normal size. I’ve had long hair ever since. Now after 10 years, I’m dying to go pixie again! But I also want to get pregnant again soon, am I’m terrified of having short hair while I balloon back up.

However, I gotta say that my mom (who is on the short and round side) sports a blonde pixie cut and it looks adorable on her.

  16. Samantha says:

I say GO FOR IT! I am a “big girl” and have rocked the pixie for about 3 years on and off. I experiment with it and LOVE IT!! It really depends on how you exicute it. I prefer the spiky in the back and longer bangs and ears. (I usually tuck behind the ears). It is loads of fun to play with. The only down side is the up keep. I have to get it trimed about every 2-3 wks to keep it stylable. I tried to copy and paste some before (with long hair) pics and after (rockin the pixie) but could not, but I can tell ya “It Can Work!”

  17. Samantha says:

oh, you can look at some of my pixie pics on my myspace.
myspace.com/ris_and_nics_mom (I do have to admit that some of my experiments did not come out as well as others. Ya just have to play with it) have FUN! also, my husband LOVES IT!!!

  18. Nicole says:

I agree with several of the other comments on here in the fact I think a couple of you need to grow up and touch down into real life. In real life, people are lots of different sizes and shapes. Whether or not overweight people need to eat better and exercise is besides the point. The actual point is that if you want to wear your hair a certain way, then do it. Some hair styles depend on the face shape, but it really comes down to your attitude about it. If you love it, other people will respond accordingly. If you feel good about it, then they will too. And also, if someone doesn’t like it, who cares? Are you living your life for you or for them? If you are so concerned about how other people will like YOUR hair cut, you may have bigger problems on your hands. Confidence is the most attractive quality about a person.

  19. sara says:

thank you Nicole. i just had a pixie cut and was scared of the outcome, but i’m not anymore! X

  20. Gia says:

I also agree w/ nicole, just believe in yourself, and so will everyone else!

  21. Sarah says:

ok so has anyone seen Dame Judy Dence? Pixie cut for years, rounder figure. TOTALLY HOT. i love it. she is my style icon for over 60.

i had a pixie cut when i was at my heaviest (160) and i got tons of compliments.

  22. juls says:

OK its me again. Next week I am getting the cut. All I needed was some positive comments and I got them!!!! My mind is made up

  23. jettie says:

I think some of the comments are unnecessarily harsh but true. Pixie cut hair on a chunkier frame (say, size 16-18 and up) can be cute if you do the long bang thing. If not, unless you’re chunky but happen to have a really good bone structure and delicate features, a short pixie cit will look butch especially when you wear pants. It will look like a man. I’m a hairdresser and I’ve seen it. I always try to steer my clients in the right direction to what I know will suit them. I’m not saying chubby people should only have long hair, I’m only saying the pixie cut specifically may not be the best look for most larger women.

  24. Remia says:

Judy dench is not skinny I agree, but she has delicate features and a small pixie-ish face.

  25. ak says:

I’m a sophomore in college and decided to shave my head a couple of months ago, just to test it out. At first I felt a bit naked, but I ended up loving it, and so did everyone else. Right now I’m in the growing out process, and my hair is at it’s most awkward length thus far, because it’s not long enough to really style (except for in a fauxhawk). I would say anyone can cut their hair short as long as they’re ready for all the attention it brings, both positive and negative. It doesn’t matter what other people think of your hairstyle as long as you love it and are totally committed. My mother at first was mortified, but even she ended up really liking the shaved head-look on me (it helps that I bear a striking resemblance to Natalie Portman without hair). Everyone should go short once, even if they think their face isn’t the right shape or something silly like that. It’s just hair, and after you do it once, you never have to do it again.

  26. libbie says:

I am full figured and I look cute in a pixie cut. I have a variation of Elisha Cuthbert’s cut, I have longer bangs, short choppy layers and I keep it very sleek. I think the key is your facial features. I have large eyes, not bug eyes, just big. I also have high cheekbones and full lips. I don’t have a large face though, and my body is bigger but proportionate. I think that if you want a pixie cut, you should have a proportionate face.

A few secrets to the perfect styling for a pixie. For a sleek pixie, use a smoothing cream or smoothing milk. I like Fekkai’s smoothing creme, it is kinda pricey, but a dime sized amount smoothes my hair perfectly. Next, if you want to chunk the layers in the cut, use a paste. I like Paul Mitchell’s creme pomade for this. Just rub your hands together and stroke through your hair. It creates nice chunky streaks while keeping the frizz down.

  27. Jade says:

Hi! I have a size 14 figure with a round face. Every time i go to hair dresses there tell me its best to keep my long hair length. I have the confidants to get a pixie hair cut but scared of the hair dresser laughing at me saying i want it cut this way?

  28. Mallory says:

This doesn’t really have anything to do with whether or not men are attracted to you. If you want a pixie, no matter your face shape or body shape, then go for it. If you feel beautiful, you are. Your confidence is 100x more attractive than your physical appearance anyway.

  29. kate says:

jamie lee curtis i guess you could say, but it does look best if you are either petite or have strong facial bones

  30. Interesting post. You have a new subscriber:) Thanks again, Kane

  31. Jeanne says:

I’m a hairdresser, and I have actually seen a very short pixie on a quite overweight woman, and it totally ROCKED. Just an ordinary girl, no superstar or anything, but it really did look good on her.

On the other hand, I have have had short hair myself, although not a pixie cut, and I am rather broad in the shoulders, and it just makes me look like a guy. I am tempted to try it, but I hesitate… it really depends on the cut and how you comb it… but you also really need to be wearing make up and feminine clothes if you’re like me, to pull this off.

  32. joy says:

hey jeanne, i was just wondering form a hair dressers point of view what you think the is the best cut for a round face, i have medium sized eyes and nose and big lips lol. i got done experimenting with a black bob, i redyed it blonde and its grown out alot, what do you recommend?> this question id for anyone else or has some good advice :D thanx my email is bejoyfuleveryday@hotmail.com

  33. Jeanne says:

For a round face, if you are going short, definitely something with volume on the top, with a round face, the widest part of the face is around the cheeks, and you want to put either volume above or volume below, to balance out the width of the cheeks. If you want to keep it longer, something like a shag would look good too, which is layered so there is volume on top, then it comes in around the cheeks and then out again around the neck. You need to blow-dry something like that though, unless you have really thick hair or something.

I would go with shorter around the ears and longer on top.

  34. Shorty says:

I’m 4’11″ and I really wanna get pixie. I’m slightly Asian so I kind of have the eyes but it’s not to extreme I am small and skinnyish but I still don’t know if I should get one. PLZ HELP!!!

  35. Mandy says:

I’m 5’4″, about 135-140 lbs. I’m going through a lot of change right now (starting college, parents divorce, etc) and I wanted to chop my hair off and get a pixie cut. I feel like I have the confidence to have it, but my Mom tells me I will look like a lesbian or a boy, or fat. I have a round face (not fat, just the shape) and a small nose and mouth and normal eyes. I wear red glasses. My body is proportionate, but I’m afraid my Mom’s predictions will come true; I’ll look like a fat little boy. What do you guys think?

  36. Jeanne says:

If you have any shape at all (breasts and hips – unlike me) then you won’t look like a fat little boy. Do you have a very feminine face? If not, if doesn’t really matter, because you can just wear a bit more make-up to make sure you do look more feminine. I think the trick to pulling this off, is HOW you style it. Don’t just wash and go. Lots of gel and hair pulled to one side or forward, a bit spiky, lots of texture, that’s the way to go if you don’t want it to look like a boy’s cut. If you just wash and go, it doesn’t look the same. At all.

  37. Andrea says:

I’m not a small girl ( 5’9″ & size 12-14) Heck I’m fat-ter than average, and I’ve been wearing my hair short for years. I’ll even say that I have the pixie cut and I love it. When I do start to grow it out , it usually gets to my chin ( a la bob) and I end up hating it. my hair ends up dragging down my features. blech! The key to the cut is to have a smaller face. I don’t have fuller face. You also have to ‘girlie’ it up a bit, if you don’t want to look like you older brother – wear a bit of make-up and ask your stylist to go a little whispy around your face and hairline. And if you don’t like it , RELAX – it’s only hair, it’ll grow back!

  38. Amy says:

I’m a pretty short and “curvy” girl, 5’4″ and 140-145lbs, and I have a pixie hair cut and I think it looks great on me and I’ve gotten many compliments on it.

  39. Mary says:

I’m a big ol’ thickums and I’m ROCKIN a super short pixie. Best haircut I’ve ever had. I was pretty nervous about it at first (afraid of the tiny-head look) but my hairdresser siad it was all about face shape. Good thing I trust her…because my husband and friends all agree that it’s the best haircut they’ve ever seen on me. Go for it.

  40. SUZY says:

One of my closest friends has a super short pixie cut that I am so jealous of and she is on the short and round side. She looks precious with it and I scold her when she talks about growing it out. She also has super cute black rimmed sleek glasses. The key for her being full figured and sporting the “do” is that she has very delicate features and she girlies up her look with makeup and accessories. I say big or small, a pixie cut can work. Just make sure it is styled well and that you femme it up.

  41. Tarryn says:

I think chubby people can rock the pixie cut if they have delicate features. I think that goes for anyone really even if you’re thin. Short hair will really emphasize ur facial features and if you have a meaty face or a large nose or large lips or hooded eyes, it will emphasize these things. If you’re chunky in addition to having dense features, it’s even more unflattering. You can rock other short looks but not specifically the pixie. You can rock maybe the Rihanna which gives you longer hair up top/in front and at the sides which can soften the effect of ur features.
Nobody should be able to stop you from doing whatever hairstyle u choose but at the same time you owe it to yourself to look your best and select something flattering.

  42. Jade says:

I am considering on getting a Pixie cut. I want a 60′s pixie cut. But, I need an image to take to my hair dresser. Have any idea where I can get any?

  43. wantsapixiecut says:

Kelly Osbourne (Ozzy’s female spawn) sports a pixie-semi-bob. i think she looks rather classy with it, even if she’s on the heavy/chubby side. I’ve always wanted a pixie cut myself, but I don’t have enough guts to chop my hair off. i’m fat, too, btw.

  44. Hannah says:

I once had a pixie cut; went straight from really long hair . Everyone said it suited me a lot; I’m short and not skinny, but have narrow shoulders and small arms. I also think I have kind of a long face, but small features and ears. Usually you can tell if you would suit short hair when you just tie your hair up. I loved my short hair and had all sorts of variations, including close crop all over, and short-back-and -sides with long fringe. The fringe is a bit of a comfort thing if you have never had really short hair before. i felt so free and actually more attractive with short hair, because my hair is really fine and when long it just drags my face down, falling flatly.
I dyed the pixie hair black which made it even more fun. I also felt younger and trendier with really short hair. I would encourage anyone to try it!

  45. just got the pixie and lovin' it says:

Super short pixie is super cute! It does help to be pretty. The notion that we are only female if we grow our hair is ludicrous, if your man will leave you if you cut it then show the jerk the door – why is that? do these guys want to drag you around by your hair? Most women look bettr with short hair, long hair is a pain in the ass.

  46. krystal says:

Why is everyone so concerned with looking feminine? If you want to have short hair and end up looking “boyish,” why would you put make up on to LOOK more feminine? Femininity is a dumb social construct with the sole purpose of making men feel more masculine. You don’t look boyish without makeup, you look like you. wtf? Geeeeez….

  47. Jeanne says:

Gosh, really… is it so hard to understand why women might want to look like women? If that’s not your thing, fine. You don’t need to insult the rest of us.

  48. Sparkle says:

ok im 5’4 and a size 14/16 big im quite proportioned i cut my hair off bout 3 yrs ago and now i cant even c myself with it … im a make up artist that has rocked everything from a pixie to the full on mohawk i roq now … i think it has nothing to do with size as much as it has to do wit the proportions of ur face if u have a rounder face of course its going to add to that but if u atleast average size cheek bones wit sum simple contouring ur n there ! i always like to do big brite lips and big earings wit my short crop

  49. Luna says:

i am JUST itching for a cute short pixie cut. i am 5’2 and 120 lbs; and i have pretty bone structure (cheeks, chin) but because of a medical condition my eyes and my nose are quite prominent. truth be told, i think my nose is huge, especially in the bulb area – so it’s a bit triangular in shape and it does stick out a bit in profile. i have nice fullish lips. in other words, i don’t have delicate features. any one think i might be able to pull it off? it’s most my giganormous nose i am worried about.

  50. maria says:

ahh. i am so glad i found this page. i’m doing it! i’m 5’5 and athletic, 140 lbs. i’m italian and my nose is on the larger side… but it’s not big, just longer and narrow and i have big eyes and nice cheeks. i really want to try a pixie at least once in my life and i think college ist he time to do it. thanks for all these comments.
