Weighing in on the High-Waisted Controversy

The latest buzz in the fashion blog world is centered one major controversy: the emergence of high- waisted jeans, skirts and shorts. This style has recently been spotted on Geri Halliwell (of Spice Girls fame), Jessica Simpson, and Mischa Barton, and the reviews are mostly negative with many charging that the look is absolutely heinous.

I would like to come out and say that I’m a proponent of the look, and it serves right all those girls who victimized this nation with their ridiculously low waistlines for the past few years. Ive seen more upper cheeks pouring out of denim than I care to remember. High waists are just a natural reaction to how extreme the hipster trend got, so I;m glad that the too super lows will soon be too super out of style to see the light of day.

I think the high-waisted look deserves a chance. I understand the fear, but high waists can actually be very retro chic (1940s and 1970s) when worn correctly, and the style gives the illusion of super lengthy legs. The key is to tuck in whatever top you choose to wear with a high-waisted piece– it’s all about creating one, lengthy, streamlined silhouette.

Admittedly, the high-waist is not for everyone. The style can look amazing on hour glass and super slim shapes since the waist is the focal point, but all that material can be very unforgiving if you carry your weight in the middle. However, no matter what body type you’ve inherited, choose your high waists wisely (i.e. if you’ve got a curvy hip and thigh, step away from the prominent front pockets!).

But if you absolutely despise this look too much to even consider it, just keep your fingers crossed that the high-rise craze and low-rise trend will get married and have a normal-waisted baby. Then, we can all be fashionably happy.

I couldn’t agree more! I have short legs and a longer torso, and an hourglass shape. Lower waisted stuff looks rotten on me (makes my legs look even shorter and gives me muffin top) and I’ve been relegated to wearing nothing but skirts until the trend blows over. I think throwing a flattering high waisted bottom into my wardrobe mix will be awesome! I recently ordered a pair of slighlty boot cut very plain grey denim high waisted jeans by Habitual. If they fit they should be perfect (no thigh pockets! Please!). Can’t wait!
