Hair Maintenance: The Right Way To Sleep

Posted August 20, 2009 by ritika

Maintaining your hair is a task that’s easier said than done. Most of us spend too much time overheating our hair with flat irons and blow dryers, which results in breakage and split ends. Unfortunately, we can all agree that styling hair is something that can’t be avoided.

However, there are a couple things that you can add to your nightly regiment to help improve and maintain good hair condition.

Tip #1: Put your hair in a ponytail or bun before you go to sleep at night. This is really important. I know that a lot of you guys worry about dents and not having enough time in the morning to shower to get rid of the ponytail hair, but the ponytail dents are a small price to pay. Tying your hair back will not only prevent excessive oils from your hair from clogging the pores on your face but also distribute more natural oils among your hair to make it softer and more manageable in the morning. You can buy the most expensive conditioners on the market, but none will compare to the benefits of your own natural oil. Don’t be worried about your hair becoming too oily either because one night of even oil distribution will not have that effect. If you continuously did this and didn’t shower in between, then your hair might start looking too oily. Do you ever notice how the top of your hair is a lot more softer than the rough ends? That’s because there’s more oil at the top–by tying your hair up, you can help spread your natural oil to the ends.

Tip #2: Do not sleep on a cotton pillowcase.  You should go for satin or silk because they are woven in tightly and won’t soak up any of your precious natural oils. Cotton pillowcases are the enemy because they also sometimes cause hair breakage. Also, it’s good to change your pillowcase periodically because that will keep your sleeping area clean and fresh in case any oil did make its way in your fabric.

Tip #3: Always make sure that your ponytail is not too tight. There are actually some risks involved with tying your hair too tight, some of which can lead to hair loss and breakage.  Whenever you tie your hair in a ponytail, make sure it’s comfortably loose. You can cause yourself serious stress, headache, or strain if you overdo the ponytail.

Following these simple tips will help maintain your natural moisture–a pivotal aspect of hair maintenance.

    Dry Shampooing: Yay or Nay?

Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Extract

I first heard about dry shampooing about 3 years ago when Bumble and Bumble came out with their hair powder products. Such pretty cans, I thought to myself, but how in the world does it work? Fast forward to now and it seems like dry powder products are everywhere, like the French brand Klorane or Rene Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo; whether you want to conserve water and be more green or you find yourself stuck in the mountains with the urge to look pretty(This is why I don’t camp) or you just survived an 18 hour flight to some exotic locale, this product is served specifically for you.

While I do like the idea of conserving water, the purist in me screams bloody murder at the thought of going 2 days without washing the do. I MUST have squeaky clean hair. It CANNOT cling to my scalp like an oily rug. And if I can’t wash it, I will wear a pretty hat.

But this might sell me on the idea: Applying dry shampoo will buy you a day (maybe two) of foregoing the wash. And we all have those days when the alarm mysteriously does not go off and we are in a flying panic out the door. A warning though: If you do use dry shampoo don’t rush, or else you run the risk of looking like Marie Antoinette. (The shampoo dispenses in a fine powder mist that you brush out) Now, here is a nice historical cross-parallel: Didn’t the ladies in waiting powder their wigs with talc? Why? Because talc is an absorbent material. And that is exactly how these dry shampoos work: they absorb sebum which is your hair’s natural oil. They also give your hair lots of body which is a bonus. I witnessed it myself after watching many a You-tube video. (I love instructional You-tube videos, I am clearly addicted.)

Shampoos remove sebum and rinse it away, while powders absorb sebum and do not rinse out.
I imagine the feeling to be like applying foundation and then powdering your face to make it matte.
Still sound appealing? If you’re still drawn to this idea, or if you forsee a camping trip ( I am making a horrid face at the thought) then this product might be for you. Give it a go…

    Jennifer Lopez - Men's Fragrance - Macy's
Lopez partnered with perfumers Jim Krivda and Ellen Molner to come up with Deseo, which means desire, and is said to have notes of bamboo leaves, jasmine, geranium and warm amber. She is dabbling in MENS FRAGRANCES…

Blah, blah… that’s fine and dandy. What I really wanted to bring up was how “beat” JLo is looking? Right? Turns out she is not one of those chicks that can get preggos, bounce back and look smashing, seems to me those twins sucked the beauty juice out of her. :(

Now Smell This Blog - Donatella Versace

Came across this image of Donatella Versace hocking her perfume from Blogdorf Goodman. Two questions sprung to mind:

    1. Anyone smell this stuff? Is it nice?
    2. I imagine it smells like tanning beds and peroxide? Ha!
