Yesterday, my son had his first day of school. I breathed a sigh of relief, thinking the worst part of it was over…the shopping. So, when he got home, he naturally handed me a list of additional items the teacher wanted as soon as possible. Off to the store I went.

Having been school shopping for weeks, I knew exactly where to go. When I got to the Back-to-School section, I was dumbfounded to find rows of Halloween goodies in its place…the same day school started. I made my way to the clearance section and found what was left of the back-to-school selection. There were some really good deals available, so I stocked up on extra stuff I knew my son would need at home for homework as well as items he’d probably need to replace over the course of the year.

Snatching up supplies now, while they’re at rock bottom prices, will save you a bundle of cash and a few stress headaches throughout the year. Have you ever tried to find a reasonably priced kid’s lunchbox in February? It’s not an awesome adventure, and you wind up paying through the nose.

While the thought of laying down any more cash on school supplies right now may give you an eye-twitch, you’ll be thankful you did a few months from now. If you see these products on clearance and can afford setting aside a stash, grab them up.

• Plastic report covers (if you have older kids)

This may seem like an extensive list, but you won’t find these products at lower prices than they are right now. Buying school supplies out of season can cost two or three times what you’ll find them for now, and children have a tendency to wear things out or lose them as the year rolls along. If you have these supplies on hand, you’ll be prepared for replacing them at a moment’s notice or have them around for homework. The worst thing that can happen is you’ll have less back-to-school shopping to do next year!

Of course, I am talking about Black Friday shopping. My wife has been an avid Black Friday shopper for years and does a fair amount of shopping on those days, but she always comes back with stories from the front. The electronics section of Wal-Mart on Black Friday is more dangerous than Fallujah, and don’t even try going near housewares unless you are willing to kill or lose a limb.

On Black Friday, everyone seems to channel their inner devil in order to have presents to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Yeah, seems a little odd to me, as well. You can have an 80-year-old woman in a walker calling you names that would make sailor blush, all because you’re going after the last $3 blanket. Do you say, “I’m sorry, ma’am. I didn’t realize you wanted this. Here you go?” No. You leer back at the old woman and threaten to lock her grandkids up in the basement and reenact the “Saw” movies unless she drops the blanket.

I have never been much of a sale watcher, either. In fact, I hardly ever look at the price when I buy something or the brand. If you want me to buy your product, then place it in the front of the row within easy reaching distance. Maybe that’s why I can’t wrap my head around Black Friday madness.

My wife comes home with bags of bloody booty and begins telling me how much each one cost and how much she saved. She’s like a junkie that just got her first holiday fix, and she’s already getting the shakes in anticipation of the next outing. There will be other sales throughout the holiday season, but nothing will match the pure adrenaline-rushing pace of Black Friday.

It’s quite a site, and there has been the occasional injury from wrestling with other crazed people. Luckily, there haven’t been any trips to the emergency room… yet. It’s only a couple of weeks until that fateful day, and she is already beginning to thirst some discount blood. God help any of you who get in her way.
