I love baby showers. They're estrogen-packed coo-fests where everyone is there to celebrate a miracle. I enjoy the silly games, funny stories of when the mom-to-be was a child and snickering with other veteran moms as we congratulate each other for living through the sleepless nights and tar diapers. It doesn't get much better than that.

There is one thing I don't like about showers, though. The anxiety-packed wait as the proud honoree opens her gifts ties me in knots every time. I sit, nibbling my nails, wondering if someone else happened to pick out the same frilly, pink dress or fabulous diaper bag that I did.

Even following a registry isn't insurance that your gift will be one-of-a-kind. In fact, the guest of honor at this weekend's soiree received two of the same baby bouncer, which was on the gift registry, and I happened to be sitting with the unfortunate woman who's duplicate gift was opened second. When the first bouncy seat was opened, a low, “Aww, crap,” echoed across our table. We all knew what was about to transpire. Two gifts later, as my friend opened an eerily similar package, from across the room another, “Aww crap,” drifted through the air.

Even following a registry isn’t insurance that your gift will be one-of-a-kind. Two gifts later, as my friend opened an eerily similar package, from across the room another, “Aww crap,” drifted through the air.

The situation is awkward for everyone involved. The gift-givers are embarrassed and wonder who’s is headed back to the store. The recipient is put on the spot and starts babbling fibs about leaving one at grandma’s house or some other such nonsense not a single soul believes. And, last but certainly not least, the other guests feel the need to start offering up bizarre reasons why having two bassinets is a blessing in disguise and how much they wished they had more than one when their children were babies.

To avoid being part of such an unpleasant debacle, give one of these tried and true ideas a go:

The Pitch-In Maneuver: Going in on a pricier registry item with some other attendees is always a nice idea. It’s unlikely that a big ticket item, like a crib or travel system, will have a doppelganger at the shindig.

Get Techie: Stray from the baby department and head to electronics. A video camera or small CD player is a great way to go. Both are awesome to have and will be useful as the little one gets older.

Go Homemade: Something handmade is sure to be both unique and a baby shower showstopper. An afghan, quilt or painted wooden letters with the cherub’s name on it are all fabulous gifts with true sentimental value.

Picture This: Mommies-to-be can always use gift cards, they’re totally one-size-fits-all, but what about a gift card for a portrait-sitting? Babies are expensive and if you have to make a choice between diapers and family photos, diapers are going to win, hands down.

Check out some of their baby girl cakes. This first one is my absolute favorite! It’s the epitome if girly in my opinion.

Jungle Safari Diaper Cake – Pink: $89 Activity Piggy Diaper Cake: $94

Here are some cute options for baby boys:

This eco-friendly diaper cake is made with 55-60 size 1 Seventh Generation disposable diapers which are made with non-toxic polymer & no chlorine. There is a bottle of Baby Avalon organic cornstarch baby powder at the top. This is also a great option for a “neutral” baby shower gift.

If $89-$109 is kind of a stretch for you, they also have super cute mini cakes for $20-$35. This one is my fave of the bunch:
