I love a bargain, and let’s face it, babies and kids need a LOT of stuff. From clothing to furniture and everything in between, parents are constantly buying for kids. Constantly.

I enjoy secondhand shopping. It’s a cheap thrill (pun totally intended) to find awesome clothes or cool toys and books for a huge savings. In fact, in my family, finding a super deal is brag-worthy.

Still, there are certain things that should be purchased from a store, still in it’s original packaging, most often for safety reasons.

Cribs: First, safety standards for cribs have changed several times in the last few years. You can’t just rely on the soda can trick anymore. Drop side cribs, for instance are a huge no-no now, because babies can get their heads and hands pinched or caught if the side comes down. Any crib’s safety can be compromised if it was used by a previous owner. Babies who use a crib through the early stages of toddlerhood can be pretty rough on their cribs.

Car seats: First, safety-wise, the seat may seem in great shape at first glance, but underlying cracks, chips or seatbelt damage may be present. Potential hazards greatly outweigh any savings. Second, any mom will tell you that a car seat can get pretty nasty. Spills, spit up, leaky diapers… they all happen and, while most models of car seats have removable covers, many have padding that is permanently fixed on the unit and can’t be cleaned well. All that yucky stuff soaks in and is there for good. Blech.

Mattresses: Whether for a crib or bed, take a pass on mattresses, not only for the soaked in yuck factor, like the car seat, but because there could be bed bugs, bad springs and even mold.

Open personal items: I know this sounds weird, but I’ve been to garage sales where open, partially used containers of lotion, powder, baby wash and even disposable diapers have been for sale. I can’t explain why someone would want to share their leftovers, but eww. Follow your common sense. As for the diapers, they may look totally fine, and I know that I’ve accidentally purchased the wrong size and tore a whole in the bag before I realized it, but you don’t know how long or where they’ve been sitting around. There could be dust and irritants in the bag that you don’t want touching your sweet one’s tush.

Antique toys (unless they’re for decorative purposes): If you come across a cool old toy that you’d like to put on display (on a very high shelf), that’s one thing, but if it’s for your child to actually play with, then err on the side of caution. Old toys don’t meet new safety standards and have probably been played with by generations worth of children. Because they’ve been loved for so long by so many little ones, they might not be the safest items to have around your children.

While this weekend isn't the Superbowl, it might as well be, for those of us in the Midwest. The only thing more awesome than going to the big game is beating the Green Bay Packers to get there.

Living as close to Wisconsin as we do, there's a pretty strong following for the Pack around here, something that is nothing short of shuddersome for those of us with our heads on straight. But no matter what side of the field you're rooting for, football is a big deal around here.

It's easy to see where a fan's allegiance lies, just by looking at his kids. Around here, as soon as we find out the gender of a baby (yes, in utero) we start buying the appropriate paraphernalia. From teddy bears, rattles and bibs to shoes, clothes and outerwear, football fans deck out their kids, so there is absolutely no question who they'll be watching every winter Sunday for the rest of their lives.

I mention gender, because football merchandise isn't just for little boys anymore. A few years ago, manufacturers of sports memorabilia and apparel realized that the ladies like the rough and rowdy sport, too.

I mention gender, because football merchandise isn’t just for little boys anymore. A few years ago, manufacturers of sports memorabilia and apparel realized that the ladies like the rough and rowdy sport, too. As soon as we found out my brother was having the first girl in our family (because all of mine are boys, of course), the race was on to find the cutest infant Bears cheerleading dresses and pink and white jerseys we available.

Holidays and birthdays always boast new Bears clothes wrapped up in festive paper and bows and, if the occasion happens to fall on a Sunday, our whole family is decked out in navy blue and orange, so we don’t clash with Grandpa’s getup.

When our kids are learning to talk there are three things they need to know immediately:

Mama

Dada

Da Bears

In the Midwest, every day is game day, and we make sure our kids’ clothing, toys and everyday needs reflect our preference of team. Team spirit is huge, and we have to make sure our children are clearly aware of where their loyalty is placed.

If you’re getting ready for the big game this Sunday, it’s not too late to get your kids in the game. Might I suggest a Bears helmet?

Especially baby shoes. But, in the rural area I live in, the selection of baby and toddler shoes isn't very impressive. Thankfully, the Internet offers such a vast array of footwear options that my boys can always play in style.

There is one problem, however. With the way my kids grow so quickly, guessing what shoe size to purchase leads to more returns than actual purchases that pan out. The good news? I found a site, TenTallTrees.com, that mails out foot-sizing charts for children, for FREE.

I was pretty excited when I came upon the site, so I hurriedly filled out the short mailing form. Within three weeks, I had my chart, which is a simple sizing chart on one side, and a measuring chart on the other. It works great! Now I can order from any online shoe store and know that I'll be getting shoes, boots and sandals that fit my boys every time.

You don't have to worry about receiving tons of unwanted solicitations, either. Since I signed up for the chart, probably a good six months ago, I haven't been bombarded by e-mails and junk mail. What mom has time for that business? I know I don't.

I love shoes. Especially baby shoes. But, in the rural area I live in, the selection of baby and toddler shoes isn’t very impressive. Thankfully, the Internet offers such a vast array of footwear options that my boys can always play in style.

If you like to shop for your kids’ footwear online, then you’ll love the simple shoe-sizing chart from TenTallTrees.com. It’s easy to use and about the size of a door hanger, so you can just slip it into your desk drawer until you need it. The online form is easy to fill out, and you’ll receive your chart card in time to start some fabulous sandal shopping for spring!

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and FDA are warning parents not to buy, or continue the use of, sleep positioners for babies. After 12 reported infant deaths (ages 1 month to 4 months) over the last 13 years, the agency is concerned future life-threatening incidents may occur.

Sleep positioners are typically flat with wedged sides or a cushioned, inclined mat with raised round or wedged side bolsters. While they are marketed with the primary objective of reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), neither the CPSC, nor the FDA, have seen any data supporting the claim.

If you currently use a sleep postioner, the CPSC urges you to discontinue use, as they feel, based on infant fatalities and other reports of potentially dangerous incidents, the units are suffocation hazards. A baby can roll into a position where her face can become wedged into the corner between the raised side and mat. If she is unable to move her head enough to allow sufficient airflow, she will be at great risk of suffocation.

Currently, there is no official recall of any sleep positioners. The FDA is encouraging manufacturers to act on its strong recommendation to discontinue the distribution of these products. At least, until they submit clinical documentation proving the benefits of the product are greater than the risk of suffocation.

If you currently have a sleep positioner for your baby, the CPSC strongly recommends you immediately stop using it for the safety of your child.

If you have any personal reports of incidents or injury concerning the use of a sleep postioner, the CPSC would like to hear from you. You may contact them here to fill out a report.

When my husband and I first got hitched, we really didn’t have a lot of money, so one of our favorite things to do was just start driving. No destination in mind, just an aimless cruise.

On one such occasion, we had a full tank of gas and $6 between the two of us. We wound up grabbing a couple sandwiches from the McDonald’s dollar menu in Iowa and heading home. It was an awesome trip and we returned home with a buck to spare.

Now that we’re parents, things aren’t quite as carefree. There’s no way you could talk me into driving four hours in a random direction with less than $10, now. That’s just begging for trouble.

Still, the adventuresome spirit hasn’t drifted away since parenthood was added to our resume. The spontaneous jaunts still happen, but with preparation (yeah, I said it). We always make sure we’ve got a reasonable amount of cash and we pack up some necessities like spare clothes, a cooler of drinks, football, picnic blanket and an atlas, just in case. And yes, when you have three Bears-fans-in-training in tow, a football (preferably navy blue and orange, go Chicago) is a necessity.

And yes, when you have three Bears-fans-in-training in tow, a football (preferably navy blue and orange, go Chicago) is a necessity.

And then, there’s the Adventure Bag.

The Cooper family Adventure Bag has grown larger with the addition of each new little person, but the spirit is the same. It’s all about impromptu fun.

Before we take off, I pack up the Adventure Bag with all the bells and whistles and then keep it at my feet when we’re on the road. Then if a tummy gets the munchies or little hands need something to do, we’re prepared.

Here’s a sneak peak into the usual Adventure Bag necessities:

Tissues

Wipes

Small First Aid Kit

Fruit Snacks

Dry Cereal

Bubbles

Kites

Handheld Games

CDs

Extra Ziplock Bags

Notepads

Crayons and Pens

A Few Small Toys (cars, action figures, and travel Etch-a-Sketch)

Some days are just too nice to stay home, but traveling is a trick when you’ve got munchkins with you. We use our Adventure Bag to ward off grouchiness while we get our spontaneity on. The kids look forward to seeing what’s inside, and we’re prepared for any new parks or “World’s Largest” attractions we may find along the way.

What’s in your Adventure Bag?
