Now that the school year has started, more opportunities for inexpensive family nights out are available. Local high schools often offer family-friendly events for low ticket prices, such as theater productions, concerts and sporting events. You don’t even have to have a student enrolled in the school to enjoy the activities with your little ones.
There are several good reasons why taking your children to high school events are cool opportunities.
- Admission prices and concessions are WAY cheaper then other family-friendly activities, like going to the movies
- You’re teaching your children about supporting their community and civic pride
- You’re guaranteed to be surrounded by other parents, so they’ll be more understanding about a spontaneous meltdown or case of the giggles (within reason)
- Your children’s interests may be sparked by being exposed to arts and entertainment beyond what’s on TV
- Kids look up to teenagers, and will feel like they’re part of something really special
If you’d like to take advantage of high school events in your area, there are a few places you can find out schedules and times for shows and games.
Newspapers: Local newspapers often have community calendars or a page or two devoted to area happenings. The only downside to relying solely on the paper is that these listings are usually only posted a week or two in advance. So, if you want to plan further ahead, you might be out of luck.
The High School: If you call the high school’s arts and athletics departments, they can usually hook you up with the year’s events schedules in advance.
Online: If you hop online, you can check your city’s community calendar or the school’s web page to find out what’s happening for the month, if not further in advance.
Taking your kids to high school sporting and fine arts events is a fabulous way to spend time together, save cash on entertainment and support your community. You’ll also get a chance to see what really interests them, first hand. Who knows? You may just have a future quarterback or show choir star in your midst.
