There are many misconceptions out there about mom bloggers. I’ve heard criticisms that our main goal is to get “free stuff” from businesses or write about poopie cloth diapers. While reviews and doodoo diapers do happen, we all have causes near and dear to our hearts that we like to promote and support. Mom bloggers have more than just children in common, we have hopes and dreams for the future and use our little corners of the Internet to make the world a better place, one post at a time.
Yesterday, I was reading up on some of my favorite blogs and came across two women who were doing just that, making a difference by spreading the word about causes that are important, not only to them, but to all of us.
In May, a devastating tornado hit Joplin, Missouri, leaving an estimated 1 to 3 Billion dollars worth of damage and 158 fatalities in its disastrous wake. Churches, homes, businesses and schools were lost, and Joplin is in extreme need of support. Mel from Mamabuzz, a Missouri-based blogger, has been so moved by the situation that she is organizing a Teacher Supply Drive to collect various items educators will need to rebuild their classrooms and educate the youth of Joplin this upcoming school year. Some requested items are:
- Educational Toys
- Classroom decorations, such as bulletin boards and posters
- Books, readers and dictionaries for classrooms and school libraries
- Art, music and Phys Ed. supplies
- Learning and therapy tools and toys for children with special needs
This is only a partial list, so if you’re interested in lending support, please visit MamaBuzz’s Joplin Campaign: Teacher Supply Drive page.
Mom bloggers don’t just keep their outreach efforts local either. Dee from Start Dreaming is hosting a blog drive in an effort to support the Race for Congo, a cross-country bike ride which raises funds to end the conflict in Congo and bring peace to their nation. Eight men will be riding their bikes, day and night, across the US in seven days in the hopes of raising $43,000 to support and educate the people of Congo, so safety and security can be restored. Dee’s blog drive offers other bloggers the opportunity to spread the word about this amazing race against time, which will be happening August 1 through 7. In exchange for linking up your post, you’ll be entered to win one of several wonderful prizes as a token of appreciation. If you’d like to donate money directly to Race for Congo, you can visit their page here. If you’re a blogger and would like to participate in the blog drive, visit Start Dreaming to find out more.
Mom bloggers are a powerful group of women who open their lives, opinions, beliefs and hearts up on the Internet. We write to share a shoulder, spread laughter and make the world a better place for our children. I’m proud to rub virtual elbows with the fine ladies I just wrote about. Through their kind work, they’re making the world a better place and the rest of us can, too.

Thank you so so much!! I am so grateful to bloggers, just like yourself, who are willing and able to spread the word. Thank you!
