July: National Make a Difference to Children Month

July is National Make a Difference to Children Month. With millions of children in the US and billions in the world, there is surely a way that each and every one of us can celebrate this observance. Whether we contribute with donations of money, food, clothing, time or skills, we all have something to give a little soul in need.

Money

There are numerous charities and causes, locally and globally, dedicated to children, from cancer research and education to basic needs and literacy. Giving to one or more of these worthy organizations can be just the leg-up a child needs to live, grow and learn in our ever-changing world.

Basic Needs

Donating food, clothing, diapers and formula to local shelters, food banks and faith-based outreach programs provide relief for families who have fallen on hard times. No child should ever have to wonder when his or her next meal will be.

Blood

Having had a premature son who received several blood transfusions, I can attest to how much of a difference one pint of blood can make for a child. Three people benefit from one donation. You never know who’s life you can be saving.

Time

Volunteering at a shelter, school, library, community center, hospital or other local organization not only gives you an opportunity to directly help children and families, but also shows them that there are people who care. Knowing that there is support, mentoring and people who want the best for them has a profound impact on children.

Skills

Whether you’re the world’s best quilter, can build strong fences and buildings, play the piano, have a black belt in karate or make a living doing web design, there are children who can benefit from your skills. You can mentor a child and pass along what you know, speak to groups of children about what you do or contribute by donating your work or time to an organization, or even a private family.

Helping the children of the world is an investment in our global future. Every one of us has what it takes to make a difference to a child, not just in July, but all year round.
