Keep Your Family Safe on Hot Days

It’s going to be a hot one here today. My kids are already getting psyched up for some fun in the sun, which means it’s time to start taking the necessary hot weather precautions.

A day at the park or even in the backyard is a great way to get exercise and enjoy time together, but it does require a little planning to ensure that everyone stays safe. A few key steps will keep your kids’ playtime happy and healthy while they run off some energy. Can we say, “Awesome naptime?” Yes, yes we can!

Sunblock

Every day in the sun should start with sunscreen for the whole family. Even if you’re aching to start your tan or daddy is too macho for sunblock, remember that you’re doing it for yourself and your family. If you cover your children head to toe in sunscreen and then don’t use any on yourself, you might be sending your kids the wrong message. Not only are you putting yourself at risk for sunburns and possibly skin cancer down the road, but your kids will think it’s really not necessary to protect themselves.

Hats

Hats are especially important for small children with thin hair. In fact, when my boys were really little, I put sunscreen on their scalps through their hair, in case they took their hats off. Of course they’ll need a good bath after you go in, but burnt scalps are very painful and it’s better to have a little extra cleanup than an owie baby.

Sunglasses

Keep your family’s precious peepers safe with UV protected sunglasses. They come in a wide variety of sporty, sleek and fun shapes and sizes, so your clan can look stylish while they keep the sun’s damaging rays out of their eyes. Besides, babies wearing sunglasses ALWAYS make fabulous photo ops!

Cold Water

Beyond protecting your family’s skin and eyes, it’s also important to keep your children cool and well-hydrated while they’re at play. There’s nothing better and more refreshing for your bodies than some cold water. Pack up a cooler and encourage your kids to take occasional breaks to rest and replenish all the fluids they’ll be sweating off chasing Frisbees and climbing slides.

Shade

During their water breaks, have them sit in a cool, shady area. Sunshine is good, but can be overdone during long days outside. It’s important to strongly encourage shade breaks, even if you’re met with some resistance. Kids don’t always know what’s best for them, especially when they’re having a good time. That’s why they have moms, right?

Enjoying the outdoors is a fantastic way to spend time with your family and by following these few important tips you’ll all have a wonderful, safe and healthy time.
