If you’ve ever sought out sugar-free alternatives to classic sweets
like cake, cookies and candy, then you know that it’s serious and expensive business. While there are sugarless variations of most delectable standards, there are other indulgences that you’ll be hard-pressed to find. One of which is cotton candy.
I love cotton candy, despite my awareness of it just being fancy, flavored sugar. There’s just something wholesome, playful and innocent about cotton candy. It’s sweet, fun and seeped in nostalgia.
Now that I’m a mom, my affection for the confection has taken a nosedive… at least when the kiddies are around. When they get a hold of sugar, it’s like striking lightening through their veins. The energy they emit could, at the very least, blow the roof off my house, and at the most, power NASA.
So, similar to other flavored sugar candies like Pixy Stix and Fun Dip, cotton candy has become a Cooper family taboo.
And then it happened…
I was thinking of throwing a carnival-themed party for my son’s birthday, so I was looking into classic fair fare — like popcorn machines and hot dog rotisseries — when I stumbled on THE cotton candy maker.
The Cotton Candy! machine by Nostalgia Electronics works like a standard cotton candy maker with a flavored sugar mix, OR you can throw in your favorite hard candy and it will spin it into delicious, wispy, whimsical cotton candy. The beauty is, you can use sugar-free hard candy, too!
It comes with a couple of plastic cotton candy cones to gather up the sugary taste-cloud, and then you can bag it up individually for everyone to enjoy.
Talk about the best of both worlds. I can stick with the birthday theme, enjoy the tasty treat and avoid my kids’ running laps on my ceiling.
I know I’ll receive some criticism for admitting my love for cotton candy, but in moderation, a sugar-free tuft of candy fluff won’t hurt anyone. I’m not an advocate of daily candy abuse, so the Cotton Candy! machine won’t be replacing my toaster on the kitchen counter. That being said, I do believe that having something fun around for a family party or occasional movie night can boost ordinary to extraordinary and be a special treat for everyone.
