After having been through thousands of bedtime routines, I’ve grown weary of the standard dreamy fare. The
shared melody of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, The Alphabet Song and Baa Baa Black Sheep leads to the instant onset of an obnoxious eye-twitch, which, let’s just say it, isn’t cool. Other songs, such as Row, Row, Row Your Boat and Mary Had a Little Lamb aren’t far behind.
Luckily for me, my parents instilled a deep and passionate love of music in me, so my options are virtually endless when it comes to soothing sounds for my wee cherubs. I have a long play list of sweet, melodic tunes that make me smile and help my little ones settle in for a trip to slumberland.
Because I enjoy a wide variety of genres, the play list is a mish-mash of favorites and it’s easier to choose songs that are appropriate for little ears. And, because they’re all familiar to me, I can either listen and enjoy or sing along.
If you’d like to escape the dreaded children’s classics like Rock-a-Bye Baby, give some of these songs a try:
- Imagine by John Lennon
- Ben by Michael Jackson
- Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel
- What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
- Love Me Tender by Elvis
- Our House by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
- Baby, I’m Yours by Barbara Lewis
- My Favorite Things from the Sound of Music soundtrack
- All I Ask of You from the original soundtrack recording of Phantom of the Opera
- Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
- I Cross My Heart by George Strait
- Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing by Aerosmith
- The Keeper of the Stars by Tracy Byrd
I have so many songs, this doesn’t even make a dent.
The important thing when choosing a play list is picking songs that are as relaxing and timeless to you as they are soothing for your baby. If you’re a lullaby sufferer who’s looking for some relief, take some time and choose a new soundtrack to your bedtime routine. You’ll save your sanity one sweet song at a time and your little treasure will drift off to dreamland in sentimental style.
