It’s only September 30, but my kids are already in full Halloween mode. They’ve been begging to decorate for over a
week and I’m given daily updates as to what costumes they want for the big day.
I’d be less than honest if I said that I didn’t share in their enthusiasm. I LOVE Halloween and everything that comes with it. The decorations. The costumes. The candy. The spooky movies and television programs. I just adore the season, and I love that I get to share it with my kids, who seem to love it just as much as I do.
So tomorrow, we’re kicking off the October with some baking. A friend of mine made some adorable spider cupcakes last year, and I’m excited to bring my kids into the kitchen and make it into a family project. When we’re finished, we have a delicious Halloween-themed treat and plenty to freeze or share.
So, throw on your favorite spooky sounds CD, don your witch hat and make some Spooky Spider Cupcakes with your family! It’s easy, quick and a ton of Halloween fun.
Here’s how:
Ingredients
- 1 box cake mix (whichever kind your family loves)
- 1 can frosting (your preference)
- 1 bag of small circular candy (M&M’s, Reese’s Pieces, Red Hots)
- 1 bag candy corn (traditional or funky colors)
- 1 bag licorice (cut in halves or thirds)
Directions
Prepare the cake mix as directed on the box, in cupcake tins, of course.
Ice cupcakes.
On the edge of the cupcake, place two candy corn pieces with the narrow end pointing down to look like fangs. Just above them, add two round candy pieces for eyes. Place 4 licorice legs along the two sides of the cupcakes and voila…cupcake spider.
Fun Tip: Color is fun. If you’re using white frosting, add some food coloring to give them some flair. Look for a fruity rainbow of licorice and let your kids mix and match.
Letting your kids explore their creativity over delicious cupcakes will make lots of precious Halloween holiday memories. They won’t be little forever, so enjoy the family time.
