Four Breathers for the Busy Mom

Moms work hard every minute of their day. Whether they’re homemakers or moms with careers, the workday never ends. Every day is an endless shuffle of “to-do’s” that just rolls into the next.

That’s why it’s important to find time every day to schedule breathers for yourself. They can be a few minutes here or a couples hours there, but they need to happen.

As moms, we get wrapped up in the billion kajillion responsibilities we have and forget to take a time out here and there. While it may seem productive and unavoidable, this behavior can start to scrape away our sanity. We need to have a little us in our day, too.

Here are some ideas for ways to carve out some “me time” throughout your day:

1. Get lost in some music: Music, whatever genre you prefer, is therapeutic. It occupies your mind in short bursts of three or so minutes that can totally turn around your day. And the best thing about music is it travels well. Whether you’re in the carpool lane waiting to pick up your kids at school, cutting carrots for your stew or folding laundry for the fifth load of the day, crank up the radio. Let it take hold of you. Dance, sing, sway, rock out. However it inspires or moves you, go with it. You’ll feel so free.

2. Be a bathroom dawdler: Every busy mom has to make a pit-stop here and there. Keep a diversion hidden somewhere in your bathroom (examples: cross-stitch, handheld game, word puzzles). Take an extra couple minutes behind closed doors to do something you enjoy. They’ll never know.

3. Forget an ingredient: This may seem devious, and well, it is a little, but it may just be a ticket to 20 minutes of peace. If you’re burning for some alone time, find a reason to head to the store. Don’t pick the same item over and over or the hubz is going to start to wonder how you can be going through celery so darn quickly.

4. Phone a friend: You may still be working on some mundane household chores like matching socks or making lunches, but there’s no better way to release some stress like chatting with a pal. Talk about anything you can think of besides work and family if you need to. Discuss a TV program or trade recipes. Whatever your little heart desires.

Don’t let the hustle and bustle stop you from taking a minute here and there for yourself. I truly believe happy moms have happy homes.
