My children are absolutely nuts about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. They would have PB&J for every meal… if I’d let them. I’m firm about breakfast and dinner, but I usually lose the battle at lunch time.
I’m not concerned that my children are missing out on nutritious foods, because I balance their meals with fruits vegetables, milk and all that other good stuff. The thing that blows my mind is the lack of originality.
How can anyone, by choice, eat the same thing day after day? Alright…okay. I admit that their peanut butter and jelly is my grilled cheese sandwich. I could probably eat it every single day, but I wouldn’t, because that’s just crazy when there are so many other options out there.
So anyway, I’ve decided that I’m going to try to introduce them to the wide world of possibilities without losing the peanut butter and strawberry jelly feel. I’ve done some research, and these are the variations on the classic theme that I think have the most potential.
The Peanut Butter Crunch Wrap
Whatcha need: Large flour tortillas, your choice of peanut butter, chopped apples, raisins, and granola
- Slather tortilla with peanut butter
- Sprinkle with chopped apples, raisins and granola.
- Roll it up, tucking in the ends
- Cut in half and serve
This sounds so yummy, I’m afraid I’ll have to try one, too. Mama’s gotta take one for the team.
PB&J Waffle Sandwich
Whatcha need: Frozen toaster waffles, peanut butter, sliced ripe bananas, your choice of fruit preserves
- Toast waffles
- Slather one waffle with peanut butter and the other with preserves
- Put banana slices on PB half
- Slap on the jelly waffle
Throw some bacon on this baby and Elvis would approve!
PB & J Rainbow Pita
Whatcha need: Pita bread, peanut butter, strawberry jam, blueberries, sliced strawberries, sliced kiwi, mandarin oranges
- Cut pita in half and open the “pocket”
- Slather inside of pita with peanut butter on ½ and jam on the other
- Layer in all the delicious fruit
Seriously…who wouldn’t want to eat this?
So there you have it…
My mission is clear: Teach my sons that variety is the spice of life, one peanut butter and jelly concoction at a time.

You’re missing the best variation, especially if you love grilled cheese! Try a Grilled PB & J. Make a normal PB & J, spread butter on the outside and throw it on the griddle…the peanut butter gets all warm and gooey, it’s delicious! Just make sure you let it cool before serving it to the kids, we’ve had lots of burnt tongues in our house because we just couldn’t wait!
