Recipes Just Gross Enough: They May Be Delicious

Anybody else out there have a picky eater at their table? My Mini-Muncher goes through phases where she decides that she will only eat one thing for a solid week at a time, and then vehemently refuse it until the food stars re-align. I try to get my daughter to eat her three square meals a day while covering all of the nutrition bases on our way to the top of the food pyramid. We do our best to keep everything whole grained, sugar free, and un-fried. I’m always on the look-out for weird ways to sneak in nutrition while hoping that day she will find it delicious enough to eat more than one taste.

Yogurts like Little Blends by Horizon score high on both our rankings. They mix squash, carrots, and sweet potato into apple, strawberry, and banana yogurt. The kid eats and I check off a serving of veggies. I also blend a scoop of Wheat Germ into any serving of yogurt I put in front of her…hee hee, check off a grains too while we’re at it!

High Gloss and Sauce, my refreshingly sassy dose of mommy blog wit, offered up one of her secret sources of “nutritionizing” her children. She calls it Ugly Juice. She claims that her kiddies drink it. Just to prove it, she posted a photo! Photos don’t lie, so it must be little-mouth approved. Here’s her recipe:

- 1 cup of kefir (I buy strawberry flavored, but some brave souls make their own)
- A handful of spinach
- 6 or 8 blueberries
- A capful of flaxseed oil
- Dropper full of her iron vitamin
- A tablespoon or two of honey
Throw it all in a blender for about a minute and boom, breakfast.

One of the hottest blogs going is Weelicious.com. If only I had known about this blog when my daughter stared on solids…maybe I could have ventured off into food-worlds unknown and broadened my daughters picky horizons. Maybe she would totally dig things like Noodle Pancakes. She really digs noodles and is warming up to pancakes (told you she’s picky!). They claim that these are great for any meal. Curiosity piqued? Check out the recipe here.

There are many recipe books for making sure your toddler gets the right nutrition. What are some of your tricks for getting your Eensy Eater to pig out?
