At this age, it’s impossible to imagine our little Stay-at-home baby will someday move away. Of course, I am many states removed from my own family, but that seems so different from letting go of my own little girl. For now, I will savor every holiday that I get to have her close. But how does one celebrate Mom when Mom is not near enough to take out to dinner on her special holiday? Take it a step beyond the traditional flower arrangement with box o’ chocolates.
1. Surprise her with a visit! Of course this would be the Number One on the list…what mom can get too much of her kid knocking on the door for an unannounced visit? Nary a one, I daresay!
2. Send her a “day together in a box.” Include pictures, food, and “activities.” Pictures showing growing up with your mom, a framed picture of you for her to put up and show off, or updated pictures of the grandkids. Food would be great if it’s her favorite treat. If you are really crafty, pack a “picnic” so mom can enjoy a meal without cooking. For “activities,” you could make a list of your favorite memories of your mom.
3. Skype or send a video. Take the traditional phone call up a notch. Technology has turned a simple conversation into a chance to practically step into her living room and give her a virtual hug. Even for the mom who isn’t technologically savvy, programs like Skype are relatively easy to use once they have been set up.A video sending your love can be enjoyed for many viewings.
4. Get crafty. Write a poem. Make an album.
5. Go extravagant. She’s worth it. A day at the spa. Tickets for a show. A cruise.
