Countdown to Valentine’s Day

Mommy and Daddy: you spend so much time focusing on that little bundle of love, so spend a little time on each other this Valentine’s Day!

As romantic as the traditional chocolates, candlelight, and poetry are, I went on a search for some more unique ways to show your affection. With a week before Valentine’s Day, here are some great ideas to count down and show your special one that you adore them. Here are seven of my favorites of new ways to show love every day!

Looking back to the beginning, isn’t it amazing what that little seed of love has sewn into your lives? Make a seed-starter Valentine that you can plant together. This is an opportunity to reminisce about your first impressions, first date, first “I love you,” first kiss, etc. Then, plant the seeds together anticipating all of the firsts you have in your wedding future.

Is your guy the kind to wear his heart on his sleeve for you? (Forgive the adage, I couldn’t help myself!) With a tiny bit of craftiness, you can show the world that he does with handmade button heart cuff links. These are a thoughtful touch for the man with impeccable style.

Not the cuff-link wearin’ type? For the guy’s guy, a beer gift basket is a way to show an appreciation for his masculinity. This is one gift he may brag about to his buddies!

Waking up to small mementos of thoughtfulness is always welcome. A treat cone can be hung on the door knob and start the day off with a sweet surprise. This is easy to make at home. It is also fun to hang on the door of a kid’s room.

There are “love coupons” that entitle the bearer to anything from a foot rub to a sink of clean dishes. Inexpensive and thoughtful, it’s hard to go wrong when promising the recipient something that can make their life brighter, easier, or more relaxing.  In an even more thoughtful gesture, create a whole jar of thoughtfulness. Cut out paper hearts and write why you love that person, notes of encouragement, and of course lots of coupons to be redeemed! One guy was feeling really ambitious and decided to stretch out Valentine’s Day for the whole year by making 365 love notes so his wife had one for every of the year.

How can you go wrong with a thoughtful gift basket? You can’t. From wine to Tabasco hot sauce, there is a gift basket for every unique taste. These are no longer just the typical cheese and sausage baskets, there really is something personalized for your amour.

Remember that a good Valentine’s Day gift doesn’t need to be expensive. Think of something they would see often and be reminded of your affection. I collect keychains, and a few years ago, my husband brought one back from a trip overseas.  It isn’t big or fancy, but I put that particular keychain on my keys, and every day I think of him as I’m going through my day.

There’s always the wonderful ideas of recreating your first date or the place where you proposed. Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in a romantic way, or silly way, but most importantly, it’s about making it personal and thoughtful that makes it special. By creatively celebrating every day this week, your loved one will be reminded that it’s about more than just that one day a year.
